Smith Opens New Office & Classroom Space in Shanghai

The Smith School has opened new offices, along with a state-of-the-art classroom in Shanghai, China, where the school launched its Executive MBA program in fall 2005. The school joined the Maryland Center China (MCC), its representative in China, in acelebration marking the opening of the new space on June 29, 2006. Maryland Secretary of State Mary Kane, who was leading a delegation of state government and higher education leaders in China, was on hand to mark the opening of the new office. Nearly a dozen Smith School alumni and students in the Shanghai EMBA program attended the opening reception and a banquet afterward.

The offices and classroom are located in one of Shanghais premier locations, the JW Marriott at Tomorrow Square, which is a 60-story building that houses a hotel and luxury apartments along with the commercial space. The building is one of Shanghais most dramatic towers and is located near the central business district and famous BUND shopping area. The JW Marriott boasts the highest library in the world, rising 757 feet above sea level or 60 stories above the ground. The library is also fortunate to have in its collection, a number of books authored by Smith School faculty members, complements of the school. They include The Quest for Global Dominance, co-authored by Anil Gupta; Managerial Accounting by Larry Gordon; Strategies for Electronic Commerce and the Internet, and Information Technology, both by Hank Lucas; Beware the Winner's Curse, co-authored by Lucas and G. Anandalingam; andLeadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way, by Smith Fellow Robin Gerber. (Smith School Faculty Books)

The Smith School first offered its EMBA program in China in 2003, with a program in Beijing. Two classes have graduated from that program, with a third enrolled in spring 2006. The first Shanghai class will graduate in 2007. The school also delivers a custom MBA program for Otis Elevator China, one of the largest multi-national companies located in China. Smith School faculty travel to China to teach the programs there.
