Parents Visit Smith for Jazz & Desserts

Lauren Black, class of 2019 accounting and information systems double major, writes about a jazz and desserts event held on Oct. 13, 2017, at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Many parents started parents weekend on Oct. 13 at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Melanie Ashton, assistant director of the Smith minors program, hosted a “Jazz & Desserts” event; it was an evening where parents and students mingled amongst themselves, academic advisors, Associate Dean of the Smith Undergraduate Program Victor Mullins, and of course the guest of honor…Testudo.

Families enjoyed catered desserts and drinks with live jazz and a special photo booth. During the evening, Dean Mullins gave quick remarks to welcome all attendees and explained his gratitude to work with such excellent faculty. “They’re in really good hands,” Dean Mullins exclaimed to parents, introducing each of the academic advisors and office of career services representatives. A parent was so moved by his experience during the night he spoke up for the group and stated, “We are very excited to be affiliated with this program…we see so many opportunities for our children so on behalf of all parents here, keep doing great things.”

Junior finance and operations management double major Jacob Lapidus brought his parents to the event and introduced them to some of the people that contributed to his great experience at school. “I’ve been going to Jazz & Desserts every fall since I was a freshman because I love listening to music, eating great food and showing off Smith to my parents,” Lapidus explained. Keith Cotter, junior accounting and finance double major, agreed with Lapidus’ statements and exclaimed, “I thought it would be a great way to show them the classy yet fun-loving nature of the Smith School.” Both students’ parents enjoyed the feeling of community during the event and were grateful to meet the amazing faculty and students that are surrounded by their children every day.
