Bruce Golden is appointed to the France-Merrick Chair of Management Science

College Park, MD - September 1, 1998 - Dean Howard Frank and the faculty of the Robert H. Smith School of Business are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Bruce L. Golden to the France-Merrick Chair of Management Science.

The France-Merrick Chair recognizes leading-edge research in management science and operations research. It also honors a genuine commitment to teaching excellence and the development of future business leaders to compete in the information age and the knowledge economy.

Dr. Bruce L. Golden is a professor of management science at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Editor-in-Chief of the INFORMS Journal on Computing, Dr. Golden also is an affiliate professor in the university's Department of Civil Engineering and a member of the Applied Mathematics Program. He joined the Robert H. Smith School of Business in 1976 and chaired its Department of Management Science and Statistics from 1980 to 1996.

Dr. Golden has focused his studies on the interface between operations research and computer science. His primary research interests include network optimization, distribution management, heuristic search, and applied operations research. He has published more than 180 technical articles and edited 12 volumes in these and related fields.

Dr. Golden's awards include the 1994 Thomas L. Saaty Prize, the 1996 University of Maryland Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship, and the 1998 Lilly-Center for Teaching Excellence Teaching Fellowship. He has consulted for numerous organizations, including the American Red Cross, the National Soft Drink Association, Mid-Atlantic Toyota, DuPont, the Rohm & Haas Company, and the U.S. Army.

Dr. Golden received his master's and doctoral degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The France-Merrick Chair of Management Science was established by the France-Merrick Foundation of Baltimore, which awards grants for excellence within several program areas, including public, private, and higher education.
