Professor Zhao holds an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Ph.D. in Accounting from Temple University's Fox School of Business. She taught at St. John’s University before joining the University of Maryland.

She is passionate about teaching students using engaging and interactive ways. She cares about her students' learning and growth. She tries to motivate students' interest in building a rapport learning environment. She has taught courses including Principles of Accounting, Intermediate Accounting I, Intermediate Accounting II, and Accounting Information Systems. She is interested in research areas such as firm risks, law enforcement, auditing behaviors, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the accounting profession.
