Paulo Prochno

Paulo Prochno is a clinical professor at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, DBA program director and faculty director for the DC Evening MBA program. From 2010 to 2014, he served as associate chair of the department. Prior to joining the Smith School faculty in fall 2007, he held appointments at Fundação Dom Cabral, a top-ranked Brazilian school focused on executive education, and Ibmec Business School, where he coordinated open enrollment executive programs.
Prochno earned a Ph.D. in management from INSEAD, an MBA from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s in industrial engineering from the University of São Paulo. He has taught strategy in executive development, MBA, M.Sc. and undergraduate programs, earning multiple teaching awards. In 2014, he was elected to a three-year term as representative-at-large for the Teaching Community of the Strategic Management Society.
His research has examined knowledge management, organizational routines, cross-border management and manufacturing strategy, and he has presented at national and international conferences. In 2003, he received the Newman Award from the Academy of Management for best paper based on a recent dissertation.
Through consulting and executive education, Prochno has helped leading Brazilian companies shape strategy and foster innovation. Clients have included Petrobras (energy), Telemar/Oi (telecommunications), Grupo Votorantim (industrial/financial conglomerate), Furnas (energy), Samarco (mining), Correios (postal services) and Grupo Santander (banking). Before entering academia, he worked as an industrial engineer in the packaging and textile sectors.
