Working on a real-world project and interacting with business professionals can bring out the best in students, and things get even more interesting when a prize is up for grabs.

As CEO at Smith’s first-ever featured guest in 2009, Donald Graham offered a glimpse into the state of the newspaper industry amid the Great Recession. Almost 14 years later, Graham returned to Van Munching Hall to reprise his guest appearance and talk about what’s changed since then.

Industry leaders and academics from around the world gathered in Van Munching Hall recently to exchange insights into individuals and organizations creating value in their communities.

For most entrepreneurs, acquiring capital can be the difference between a vision and seeing their venture come to life. However, for entrepreneurs from marginalized and underrepresented communities, there are even more barriers to overcome.

Organized and co-sponsored by nine universities across the country including the Center for Global Business at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, Lightning Talks is a series of virtual discussions covering business resilience and how businesses can prepare for future global shocks.

Across Van Munching Hall, students are exposed to unique educational experiences that bring them in contact with industry leaders, uncover current challenges in business, build their practical skills, and help their community.

Senior undergraduates Siri Rao, Alexis Reyes and Gregory Rosario represent the Robert H. Smith School of Business as 2023-2024 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars. The trio are among 20 University of Maryland students who were recognized with their faculty and K-12 -teacher mentors in a ceremony on Nov. 3. 2023. 

The third annual Smith Advisory Council Day welcomed 150 alumni, employers and industry leaders to Van Munching Hall on Friday, Oct. 27. Participants came from across the country and as far as London, England. The event brings the councils together each year to evaluate the Smith School’s programs and curriculum, hear from current students and network.
