U.S.News & World Report Ranks UMD Part-Time MBA Program Among Nation’s Best Smith School Highly Ranked for Information Systems, Supply Chain Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing

College Park, Md. — March 15, 2011 — The part-time MBA program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is ranked No. 17 in the latest edition of U.S.News & World Report’s “Americas Best Graduate Schools,” published today. Smith's program is the highest ranked part-time MBA program in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The report recognized the Smith School’s program and research strengths in a number of specialty categories, ranking the school’s information systems program No. 5, while supply chain/logistics is ranked No. 13 in the U.S.

The Smith School’s programs in entrepreneurship and marketing both jumped up to No. 20 in the rankings. The school is ranked No. 23 in production and operations.

The Smith School's full-time MBA program was ranked 45th overall. The U.S.News & World Report's results follow the Financial Times MBA 2011 rankings, released in January, which ranks Smith’s full-time MBA program No. 18 among all U.S. MBA programs and No. 10 in the world for research.

"There tends to be some fluctuation from one ranking to another but when you consider all of the various rankings, we are among the top two percent of business programs in the world," said Dean Anand Anandalingam. "The rankings are important to many of our partners, audiences and constituents so while we don't manage to the rankings, we acknowledge their importance."

The U.S.News & World Report rankings are based on an evaluation of the nation’s 433 masters programs in business that are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. The overall rankings are based on surveys of deans, academic directors, and MBA recruiters; school-reported MBA job placement statistics; and school-reported student data, including GMAT scores, undergraduate GPAs, and the proportion of applicants accepted by the school. The specialty rankings are based on ratings by deans and directors at peer schools.
