The digital age has changed education, including making it easier than ever to make content available to the masses through free online courses. These Massive Online Open Courses – MOOCs – are a growing trend in education and University of Maryland is part of the movement.

In this edition of Smith Business Close-Up with the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, Henry Lucas talks his MOOC course that launches this spring and the opportunities and challenges that come with teaching more than 10,000 students in an online course.

Lucas is the Smith Chair Professor of Information Systems. His new book, “The Search for Survival: Lessons from Disruptive Technologies,” presents a model of survival to guide managers in responding to potentially disruptive technologies. His research interests include information technology-enabled transformations of organizations, markets, industries and our daily lives. He has conducted research on the impact of information technology on organizations, IT in organization design, electronic commerce, and the value of information technology. Lucas co-produced and co-wrote “The Transformation Age: Surviving a Technology Revolution with Robert X. Cringely,” a documentary co-developed by Maryland Public Television and the Smith School shown on public television stations around the U.S. He has authored a dozen books as well as monographs and more than 70 articles in professional journals.
