International Education Week 2019 at the Smith School

Santiago Luna, coordinator for the Center for Global Business writes about International Education Week 2019.

Join the Center for Global Business at Maryland Smith to recognize the global mindset, activities, research, and global footprint of the Smith School as we celebrate International Education Week (IEW), Nov. 18-22, 2019. The worldwide event is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to celebrate international education and exchange.

The Center for Global Business will host more than 10 events throughout the week to recognize our global mindset. All activities are open to the UMD community at large.

Faculty from the School of Languages, Literature, and Cultures will offer breakout sessions to learn and practice business language skills in German, Japanese, and Spanish at the Business Language Workshop.

During the International Coffee Hour, the center will host Georgina Dodge, vice president of diversity & inclusion at UMD to celebrate global diversity over conversation and coffee.

The Distinguished Speaker Series in International Business welcomes alumni each year during IEW to discuss how they use a global mindset in their respective careers. The topic for this year is "Global Competencies for the 21st Century Workplace." Listen to alumni stories and participate in a Q&A to discover how a global mindset will benefit your career prospects.

A unique addition to IEW this year is the workshop on "Leveraging a Global Mindset for Business Growth" at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The Title VI Centers for International Business Education and the U.S. Department of Education will host this event where the focus will be on incorporating global and cultural competencies into school programs and businesses. Learn more about how you can participate in person or live stream the event.

“International Education Week is the perfect opportunity to engage with students, faculty, and staff in the Smith School to demonstrate just how globally-minded we are as a community,” says Rebecca Bellinger, executive director of the Center for Global Business. “The entire university is invited to join us in Van Munching Hall for a week of globally-themed events and programs.”
