All undergraduate Smith School courses at the Shady Grove campus will be offered online for the spring 2021 semester. Student services will be provided remotely and all events will be virtual.  

• Accounting majors can contact their advisor, Luke Glasgow, at lglasgow@umd.edu.  
• Management and marketing majors can contact their advisor, Aki Noguchi Giron, at anoguchi@umd.edu.

The Master's Program Office is encouraging students to meet with their advisors and staff virtually when possible. While the office will be open for in-person visits, the need to social distance is limiting the number of staff in Van Munching Hall at any given time. We will continue to monitor activities and may adjust our schedule but our current plans are as follows:  

• MBA and Specialty Master’s students are encouraged to email their program advisor.
  • Full-Time MBA advisors
  • Specialty Master's advisors
• Day/time for each program’s virtual ‘walk-in’ hours will be posted once scheduled.
• Issues that require a 1:1 conversation can be handled via a phone call or by requesting a virtual or walk-in appointment in advance.
• If you have an urgent general question during the day, the Master's Programs Office (2308 Van Munching Hall) will be staffed from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
• Please ring the doorbell for assistance, it can be heard in individual offices if necessary.

The status of this campus may be affected by the state of coronavirus outbreak management in the surrounding region. Any changes will be communicated by the Master's Program Office directly to students' email.

As at the College Park campus, students are expected to wear masks, maintain social distance, follow posted signs and observe all University health and safety requirements.

The Master's Program Office is encouraging students to meet with their advisors and staff virtually when possible.  We will continue to monitor activities and may adjust our schedule but our current plans are as follows:

• Get advice for your startup idea during Dingman Fridays. These 1:1 advising sessions will be held every Friday of the semester from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. virtually on Zoom. Venture mentors, subject matter experts, guest advisors and Dingman staff are available to listen to your idea, offer feedback and provide actionable next steps.
• "Get to Know Dingman" during office hours on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. During these brief 1:1 sessions, a team member will introduce you to the Center and aim to match you with the resources, advisors, funding, programming, or other support you need.
• February 23 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Being Black in Entrepreneurship Event.
• May 4 from 4-6 p.m.: Pitch Dingman Competition.
• Enroll in one of our signature entrepreneurship courses: BMGT 468R - Fearless Founders: New Venture Practicum, BMGT 369D - Ladies First Founders, and BMGT 468U - Fearless Founders: Social Entrepreneurship Laboratory.

With the spring semester approaching, we all share similar concerns about the health and safety of our families, friends and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As parents of students, we can only imagine the stress and uncertainty you all face on a daily basis. This resource guide has been created in an attempt to bring attention to the University of Maryland's current policies and procedures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as to highlight actionable steps that the Smith School of Business is taking to keep your students safe. Finally, this guide provides suggestions from current Smith students on how to cope and manage time in a virtual learning environment.

• The UMD coronavirus information website provides the latest updates regarding the health and safety of UMD students.

Ways the Smith School of Business is Supporting Students

• Review the Smith School’s What to Expect Spring 2021 guide that consists of safety procedures within Van Munching Hall, a comprehensive list of student services, and upcoming events that will be both virtual and in-person.
• Prospective students and incoming freshmen are encouraged to review the undergraduate brochure details about the Smith School of Business and all of the opportunities that the school provides.
• Smith students are encouraged to get involved in undergraduate clubs & organizations which are continuing to run virtually and help connect students! More information can be requested by submitting a request through the SUSA club list.
• Students and parents can subscribe to the Smith Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA) newsletter that provides information regarding accountability, engagement, and services within the Smith School of Business.
• Fellows & special programs are available for students to apply to based on their individual interests.

Ways That Parents Can Further Support Their Students During Distance Learning

• Keep in mind that transitioning very quickly into a completely virtual online learning environment is challenging to begin with but adding the pressure of a global pandemic can make transitioning extra challenging. Provide space for the fact that your student(s) may be overwhelmed at first and may take some time to settle into a routine and adjust to this transition.
• Review this article about how other parents have been supporting their students during these unprecedented times.
• Understanding the difference between synchronous and asynchronous class formats:
  • SYNCHRONOUS = Class occurs weekly at a designated time; students will meet with the professor either in person or virtually based on the course requirement. Course material and assignments can be provided by the professor during class.
    Note: This format is very similar to the traditional format of a college course. However, based on class size and location, students may be required to attend lectures virtually.
  • ASYNCHRONOUS = Classes do not formally meet on a weekly basis; course material is posted by the professor. Assignments are posted on UMD canvas/ELMS. Students complete assignments on their own schedules and submit assignments through ELMS.
    Note: Time management can become trickier because the student must plan to complete assignments and review course material based on their personal schedule.
• Prior to attending classes, assist students in learning online conference etiquette in order to stay on top of synchronous lectures specific to the Smith School of Business.

Coping Skills and Recommendations From Current Students & Smith Ambassadors

• Create a designated work/study space that is separate from your sleep space.
• Take advantage of online office hours, it may feel awkward at first, but it’s very helpful, and your teachers are all here to support you!
• Dress for success during virtual class times, this may help you to get in the mindset of attending classes.
• Schedule “class time” blocks of time in your day to attend to asynchronous work.
• Utilize agendas or online organizers (e.g. Google Keep, Asana, Basecamp, etc.) for time management and to-do lists.
• Continue to utilize social clubs that the Smith School of Business offers.
