Dean Mullins on the Smith Journey
I am truly blessed to work alongside an exceptional group of Smith student leaders who make up the Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC). I extend a special thanks to DSAC and Emily Heavin, Director of the Smith Undergraduate Program, who met extensively during the 15-16 academic year to create "The Smith Journey".
So what does the Smith journey entail? During their freshman year, Smith students will begin to build their personal brand through the SmithStart program. The sophomore year will be dedicated to pioneering their path to success by focusing on an overall academic strategy. Students will take command of their career during their junior year to ensure that they are well poised for the professional journey. Finally, as a senior with an arsenal of tools, knowledge, and networks, Smith students are able to embrace their experience and celebrate their success. Ultimately, I describe the Smith journey as a powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and inspired at the same time.
As a member of the Smith family, our students have many peers, faculty, staff, alumni, and corporate partners to mentor them along the way. As I often tell the students "you’ll never experience another time in your life when so many people are focused on your success". At Smith, we are committed to helping our students become information seekers, problem solvers, opportunity creators, and community builders.
“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” (Ursula K. Le Guin)
We're always growing the Smith Journey to meet the needs of our students; more details to come!
