PhD in business: A pioneering investment in business scholarship
In an international economy driven by accelerating change, the business world needs cutting-edge scholarship that probes the complexity of the marketplace and gives practitioners, policymakers and thinkers evidence-based tools and strategies to transform our models for managing, leading, innovating and succeeding.
Bucking a national trend, with many business schools actually downsizing their doctoral programs, the Robert H. Smith School of Business has embarked on an ambitious effort to provide one of the premier doctoral programs in the U.S.
Launched in 2008, the $12 million investment is designed to make The Smith School a magnet that attracts and retains the world's smartest, most determined, most inspired students and faculty.
The initiative is funded with a $6 million gift from philanthropist Robert H. Smith, a 1950 graduate, with matching funds from the University of Maryland and The Smith School.
That investment increases annual doctoral stipends by 45 percent to $32,500, and provides essential support for scholarly research and travel.
Our pioneering investment in doctoral business scholarship will help ensure that we continue to produce world-class business school graduates who are analytical, resourceful, innovative, hard-working and passionate, and prepared and determined to manage complex problems, find entrepreneurial solutions, and succeed.
