Dean’s Message – Gary Cohen, Interim Assistant Dean of Executive Programs

Dear EMBA Alumni,

It has been several years since you received this message from someone other than Greg Hanifee.  Greg has moved on and I want to take this time to acknowledge his enormous contributions to our EMBA program and all of the programs that make up our Office of Executive Programs.  We will miss Greg as a leader, colleague and friend.  I now have the difficult task of stepping into Greg’s shoes. With that said, you have my commitment to do everything in my power to continue to advance our highly regarded EMBA program so that it becomes a source of even greater pride for our fabulous alumni.

There is more news from the Smith School.  Our new dean is no stranger to any of you.  Our entire Smith community is so happy about Dr. Alex Triantis leading us toward an even brighter future.   This is an exciting time for Smith and we want you to share in that excitement with us.  After all, you will always be an important member of our Terp family and our hope is for all of our EMBA alumni to stay engaged with us.

We saw our EM12s graduate in July, our EM13s are fully immersed in the program and applications are rolling in for the EM14 cohort that will kick off in January.   I hope you look back on those times with fond memories.  Finally, I hope you will consider attending one of our many upcoming events and I personally look forward to catching up with those of you I know and meeting everyone else.  Have a safe and healthy fall season.

EMBA Cohort 14 Recruiting Update

Recruiting for EMBA 14 starting January 2014 is in full swing.  Approximately half of the 40 seats have been filled.  Final application deadline is November 15, 2013.

A special thank you to EMBA 13 students Megan Fenlon, Tarun Luthran and Jason Mathis, as well as Tony Davenport (EMBA 8), for introducing competitive candidates to Smith’s EMBA.  Contact Shelbi Brookshire at sbrooksh@rhsmith.umd.edu or 240-464-8597 if you have interested friends or colleagues.

EMBA 12 Graduation

Thirty-eight students from the Robert H. Smith School of Business Executive MBA Cohort 12 gathered at the University of Maryland’s Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on July 26, 2013, for a very special occasion: graduation ceremonies.

With family, friends, faculty, and staff on hand, the close-knit and supportive culture of our community was clearly on display as Vice Dean Joyce Russell acknowledged the sacrifice on the families and the milestone achievement of the graduates.

Greg Hanifee, assistant dean of executive programs, said, “We’re extremely proud of this group of executives, as they have pushed us to become better as a program, but they also have represented the Smith EMBA brand with incredible professionalism.  I especially want to thank our outstanding faculty and staff (as the students have done today) for delivering on our promise of a leading EMBA degree.”

EMBA ALP - Not Just Another Project

ALP Team, Cohort 13

EMBA 13s put their ALP into action with a benchmarking expedition like no other.   In the words of Dan Cowens, whose venture Oasis Ltd. is the focus of the project, the team members wanted to "put themselves in the shoes of their customer.”  The four-hour team meeting with significant others involved cruising the Eastern Shore of Maryland, stopping at various marinas along the way.  Hard to believe this is a credit bearing course!
