Career Development Resources – Technology Tools

Below is a list of Best-in-Class technology tools available to you as a student at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. Many of the career resources listed in this section are paid for by Smith or by UMD, and are free for you as a student, so it is important to use the links we provide to access the Smith/UMD version.

Introductory Videos and PDFs: Use these “how-to” Videos and PDFs to acquaint yourself with key features of the technology tools available to you as a Smith student.

HireSmith (Powered by 12Twenty) is the OCS system of record for recruiting activity. It anchors the technology suite and is a full-service resource for employers, Smith students and alumni. 

Handshake formerly known as “Careers4Terps”, is the University Career Center’s online career management platform for University of Maryland students and alumni. Search by industry, type of job, geographic location, major, and other criteria. Use the system’s search agent to receive notifications of new postings matching your interests.

ELMS-Canvas Canvas courses provided by OCS, deliver thorough instructions and a wealth of resources to guide your career search journey. Enrollment in a Smith degree program is required.

GoinGlobal – An online resource that includes a database of H1-B employers. This tool is accessible through the Handshake website, to which all Smith students have access.

VBIC Company Information – These research tools give you access to articles from thousands of newspapers, trade publications, such as the Harvard Business Review and other major key business magazines, industry reports, market research reports, and much more. Must be accessed through UMD’s Virtual Business Information Center (VBIC); Multiple business databases are accessible through the VBIC link.

Relish Careers Job postings, especially Leadership Development programs, especially for MBA and MS students. Also business-focused online career fairs. Visit to see details. This resource is for Smith graduate students only.

Beware of Job Scams! Reminders from the University Career Center: IMPORTANT – Beware of scam emails and fake offers!

BigInterview – Practice mock interviews, review interview tips, and record and playback your interviews for your own analysis. This tool is accessible through the University Career Center, to which all Smith students have access.

LinkedIn Masterclass – LinkedIn is one of the most critical parts of any job search, that’s why we’ve partnered with LinkedIn insiders to get you free access to their online masterclass. This resource is for UMD Smith students only.

Terrapins Connect – A new professional networking and mentorship platform, and we invite you to join. This platform will connect you with University of Maryland alumni who have been in your shoes and are eager to share their educational and professional experiences.

Exponent – A tech education platform that helps students prepare for interviews in product management, product marketing, program management, business operations & strategy, data-related roles, and much more. For Smith graduate students only.

Firsthand, formerly known as Vault – Best known for its rankingsratings, and reviews on thousands of top employers, Vault also provides information on nearly 5,000 companies in more than 120 industries as well as more than 840 professions. Included are career advice blogs and discussions, a job search engine and anonymous interviews with current and past employees.

Quinncia – Advanced AI-powered resume feedback and interview practice, to help you better prepare before meeting with a coach. Quinncia uses the same technology many employers use to screen resumes, to help make sure your resume is seen by a recruiter, not rejected by a robot. Then Quinncia’s AI can give you a practice interview, with questions based on your resume. (See brief videos on why and how to use.)

ToAssist.io is an online platform within an ecosystem of information-sharing tools. The ecosystem is being designed to assist a global community of students and early career professionals in navigating the nuances of developing an impactful professional persona and network in the United States.
