Smith Sophomores Learn S’more about Unique Opportunities

What could be better than delicious desserts or playful puns? How about both at the same time? The Robert H. Smith School of Business celebrated its sophomore class at its annual Sophs’mores event on Oct. 27 with scrumptious s’mores, networking opportunities and eager upperclassmen ready to share some words of advice.

Students and faculty members flooded the atrium of Van Munching Hall excited to discuss opportunities within Smith and partake in the fiery festivities. Stations were set up at tables to recognize programs that Smith students, especially sophomores, could take advantage of: Business Honors, Fellows programs, the Center for Social Value Creation (CSVC), the Office of Career Services, the Center for Global Business (formerly the Office of Global Initiatives), and Deloitte. Students networked at tables with a s’more in one hand and another ready for a handshake.

Each of these programs offered unique opportunities for Smith students to develop themselves socially, academically and professionally. Upperclassmen volunteers were stationed at these tables ready to discuss how they grew through their experiences and to recruit these incoming sophomores. Senior finance and operations management and business analytics double major Melissa Horovitz reflected upon her involvement in the Business Honors program and the Fellows programs and said that “they were some of the best experiences she has had at Smith.”

Multiple other volunteers echoed Horovitz’s statement as they emphatically spoke to sophomores about how phenomenal their experiences in these programs were.

Sophomore finance and information systems double-major Abishek Suresh “was able to learn about various opportunities inside and outside the business school.” He also thought that “the s’mores were a great touch as it made the event more relaxed and casual.”

Every member of the Smith community is greatly appreciated, especially undergraduate students as they forge their Smith journey. Sophomore year is critical as students are beginning to understand more about what UMD and Smith can do for them. An event like this aims to bring opportunities into plain view so that Smith sophomores can easily access them in a casual and encouraging atmosphere.

Smith sophomores who attended this event learned a lot “s’more” than they did before.
