Join fellow BIG10 alumni at Food for Others on April 28th, where we will pack "power pack" weekend meals for elementary-school children in need. This annual event gives local alumni an outlet to give back to the community and is held during the University of Maryland's Do Good Service Month initiative.
Food for Others is an important part of Northern Virginia’s safety net for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet and need to supplement food supplies. Many Fairfax County school children do not have sufficient food at home to carry them through a weekend. These "power packs" supply a child with breakfast, lunch, snack, & dinner for the 2 weekend days. Currently, Food for Others gives out approximately 67,000 "power packs" to children in 29 Fairfax County Elementary Schools.
During this event, we will compile weekend food packs that contain two breakfast items, two lunch items, two dinner items, two snack items, and two drinks packed in a gallon-sized Ziplock bag. Our goal is to complete at least 500 weekend food packs!
This event is hosted by UMD's Northern Virginia Alumni, UMD's Smith School DMV Area Alumni, and Penn State University's Northern Virginia Alumni. Individuals and families of all ages are welcome
