U.S. Army veteran and educator Joseph Guy Mattingly Jr., a professor emeritus and longtime undergraduate director at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, died May 17, 2014, at his home in Annandale, Va. He was 84.

Research Interests: Intermodal transportation, motor carrier industry, national security.

Editor of the Defense Transportation Journal for more than 18 years, Mattingly has been a member of the Smith School faculty since 1970. His research examines intermodal transportation, the motor carrier industry (including household goods movers), and transportation and logistics requirements for national security. Mattingly worked as a transportation and logistics officer in the U.S. Army for 22 years. He has served as a logistics and small business consultant to government agencies, and has made presentations to many industry and governmental groups, including the National Defense Transportation Association.
