Smith Analytics Consortium Second Annual Datathon

On April 19, 2021, the Smith Analytics Consortium (SAC) is hosting the 2nd annual Datathon, a 2-week long data-focused competition. Students will have an opportunity to use their problem solving, analytics, and data visualization skills to build a market entry business case for a renewable energy (photovoltaic (PV) solar array) company in Maryland.

Sample variables within the data include: power generation (MW), solar radiation, PV efficiency, average electricity cost ($).

The winning team will receive a $500 cash prize!

Key Events

  • Core Consulting Series [3/29, 3/31, 4/1]: Three 1.5 hour targeted workshops to hone skills needed to succeed in the Datathon and an opportunity to meet team members.
  • Datathon Competition [4/19 - 4/30]: Case competition where teams of 3-5 students analyze and visualize data, culminating in recommendations for a market entry of a solar (PV) company in MD.


  • March 22 – Registration opens (registration fee: $10)
  • March 29/March 31/April 1 from 6:15-7:45 p.m. – Core Consulting Series
  • April 19, 6:15-7:15 p.m. – Datathon Kick-Off
  • April 30, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. – Datathon Final Presentations

Join DataKind DC at a virtual DataJam! A DataJam is a gathering for do-gooders doing cool stuff with data. DataKind DC’s DataJam will be a time for volunteers to start or continue work on a variety of social good projects.

DataKind DC has a number of new and ongoing projects you will be able to contribute to - or you can bring your own project! To get an idea of the projects we will be starting and continuing, check out projects with a status of “Active”, “Lead”, and “Scoping” on

UMD Data Challenge 2021

At this annual, week-long event, students from across UMD come together to solve real-world challenges, develop industry contacts, and win prizes. Teamed up, students brainstorm solutions for real companies based on information provided. Students gain valuable team-building, resume-building, and networking experience.

Must love brainstorming and problem solving, but no data analytics experience is required! Each year, students from nearly every college/program across UMD have fun at this event. Join us!
