The Emerging Markets Case Competition is an opportunity for MBA students interested in global business strategies, focusing on emerging markets and social impact, to address challenges in emerging markets through real case studies. Teams from top MBA programs compete by providing a set of recommendations to an unpublished case challenge that is judged by a panel of corporate executives and international development professionals. Student teams are evaluated on the critical issues of the case, the quality of their analysis, the feasibility of their recommendations, and their overall delivery and ability to navigate the question and answer session.

The 2019 competition will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23, at the University of Maryland, College Park in Van Munching Hall. Congratulations to University of Notre Dame who won the 4th Annual Emerging Markets Case Competition.

5 p.m. Teams disperse into case rooms
5–7 p.m. 15-minute 1:1s with teams

8–8:30 a.m. Teams deliver final electronic presentations
9-11 a.m. First round of competition
11–11:30 a.m. Judges deliberate
11:30–11:45 a.m. Announcement of finalists and feedback
11:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m. Final round
12:45–1 p.m. Judges deliberate
1–2:30 p.m. Awards ceremony and luncheon
2:30 p.m. Adjournment

Team Rules

In order to compete, teams should follow these rules when registering:

  • Only one team per institution is permitted to participate in the competition. If an additional team participates from an institution, please advise with UMD staff.
  • Teams must be comprised of enrolled MBA students for the spring semester from the registering school.
  • Teams must be comprised of three to five team members.
  • Can replace team members in the event that a previously enrolled team member cancels.
  • The registration form is due to the Smith School CIBER by February 15.
  • More detailed competition rules will be distributed upon registration.

A prompt will be sent to each team to submit a resume and photo of each team member once they register.


To ensure participation, we ask that each school submit a ‘promise to pay’ in the amount of $100 in the event their team does not participate.
