International Fellows Program

As a Smith International Fellow, you will be preparing yourself for careers in global business by developing your critical language skills and cultural understandings while mastering your field of business.

All students participating in Freshman Fellows with double majors in business (any discipline) and foreign language (any language) by the beginning of the fall semester in your first year of study will be considered Smith International Fellows, eligible for special programming.

You will enroll in BMGT 110F and participate in Freshman Fellows activities, with some especially designed to explore the world, to include the following opportunities:

  • Optional dedicated BMGT faculty-led group study-abroad winter-term sophomore year.
  • Language majors can also participate in 3-week, 3-month and full-year study abroad in any UMD and/or accredited study abroad program. The norm for language majors is Spring junior year.
  • Opportunity to live in Language House. Language House is open to all majors, staffed by native speakers. Applicants must be sophomores with intermediate speaking ability in the target language. Language House residents are expected to speak in their language at all times.
  • Opportunity for internationally-relevant internships.
  • Special events and activities, e.g.: Global Food Fair + Etiquette Program.

Program Matriculation & Administration

Matriculation: To secure your place in the Freshman Fellows Program—including International Fellows—you must attend the special Freshman Fellows Orientation and enroll in BMGT 110F in your first Fall semester. The International Fellows Program is a Two Year Program.

Declaration of your second major in Language: Because students may declare only one major upon application to the University of Maryland, we recommend declaring your BMGT major first, and then we will help you declare your second major in language when you come to campus during the summer for New Student Orientation. You will then have an opportunity to meet your Foreign Language advisor and fine-tune your registration in your language courses prior to the start of Fall semester. Throughout your program of study, you will have the services of both your Business and your Foreign Language advisors to call on.
