The flagship approach of the Center for Social Value Creation is experiential learning. Through semester-long engagements students sharpen critical thinking and teamwork skills while enhancing their resumes. They consult with business organizations, pitch ideas to start companies, and travel abroad to work in developing economies.

SOCIAL INNOVATION FELLOWS

The Social Innovation Fellows Program teaches undergraduate students to recognize opportunities that arise from social and environmental issues. This is an interactive practicum experience that includes an optional internship and co-curricular programming aimed at developing skills in the areas of sustainability, social enterprise/entrepreneurship, impact investing, marketing, and new media. Students leave the program with a deep understanding of how to apply their business skills toward issues of social and environmental importance. MBA SMITH EXPERIENCE, SOCIAL VALUE CREATION

The Smith Experience is six credits of experiential learning that starts in the spring semester of the Smith MBA student’s first year. In the area of social value creation, students may elect to participate in the Sustainable Systems Practicum or the Social Venture Practicum. CHANGE THE WORLD.ORG NON PROFIT CONSULTING

The Center for Social Value Creation has partnered with Grassroots.org, harnessing the expertise and enthusiasm of business school students to benefit nonprofit organizations. With support from Make Change! Trust and led by the University of Maryland, the ChangeTheWorld.org Consulting Program matches students with nonprofits around the country, combining capacity-building consulting services with hands-on learning experiences. The ChangeTheWorld.org program is an extracurricular, resume-building, non-credit offering for part-time MBA and undergraduate business students. PITCH DINGMAN : SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP (PD:SE)

Pitch Dingman: Social Entrepreneurship (PD:SE) is partnership of the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship and the Center for Social Value Creation. On the First Friday of every month one Social Entrepreneurs in Residence (SEIRs) from the Center for Social Value Creation will be available from 11 AM to 1 PM to offer expert feedback to students and alumni who wish to pitch their social impact business ideas. Students who participate in PD:SE are eligible to compete for prize money at the Social Enterprise Symposium (March 1, 2013). Pitch sessions are held in 15 minute increments in the Dingman Center (2518 Van Munching Hall). Please reserve your spot in advance. For more information, contact Guillermo Olivos. Fall Semester PD:SE Dates include September 7th, October 5th, November 2nd, December 7th, and Friday, February 1st, 2013.

GLOBAL FIELD PROJECTS

The center is pleased to offer unique opportunities for social change around the world, including projects in developing countries like Burkina Faso, Honduras and Ethiopia. Through partnerships with the Smith School’s Office of Global Programs, the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), and Engineers without Borders, you will gain academic credit while developing innovative business skills.
