Spring 2009: Ethics Lecture Series

Each semester the Smith School hosts a three-part Business Ethics Lecture Series featuring corporate and government speakers.

March 26, 2009: Social Enterprise Symposium

Please join the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business on Thursday, March 26 for the first Social Enterprise Symposium, a student-run program designed to introduce new approaches for making impactful, lasting social change around the world using market-based approaches.

March 27, 2009: Smith Net Impact MBA Career Trek Day 2009

Are you an MBA student interested in full-time jobs or internship opportunities that have impact in the social and environmental arenas? Join us for a day of networking and career discovery as part of the largest MBA career trek in Smith school history. Students have a choice of 1 of 2 treks to some of the most high profile and well known firms and organizations in the DC area. Speakers include CEOs, VPs, lawmakers, alumni, and recent MBA grads.

March 30, 2009: Smith Speaker Series Presents Alex Counts, President and CEO of the Grameen Foundation

The Robert H. Smith School of Business is proud to present Alex Counts, President and CEO of the Grameen Foundation. With the help of 23 countries and a dedication to social consciousness and change, Counts has impacted the lives of an estimated 45 million of the world’s indigenous people.

April 1, 2009: Smith Speaker Series Presents George Akerlof, Nobel Prize-winner and Koshland Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley

The Smith community is invited to join George Akerlof as he discusses ideas from his new book, Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism, which details how “animal spirits” are driving financial events worldwide – from blind faith in ever-rising housing prices to plummeting confidence in capital markets.

 

April 7, 2009: Smith Speaker Series Presents John Allison, Chairman of BB&T Bank

John Allison, CEO of BB&T will discuss the importance of acting ethically in business. Specifically, he will address how BB&T avoided becoming entangled in the sub-prime mortgage crisis by acting ethically and in accord with their company values.

 

April 29 2009: Baltimore Regional Alumni Event, 6 - 8 p.m.

Join Baltimore Terps at M&T Bank Stadium for a Maryland alumni gathering, featuring:

  • A panel discussion on entrepreneurship and leadership moderated by ABC 2 News reporter Brittney Gordon '01 and featuring Mark Burdett '81, Baltimore Ravens vice president of corporate sales and development; Kevin Plank '97, Under Armour CEO; Gary Williams '68, Maryland men's basketball coach and scholarship co-chair for Great Expectations, The Campaign for Maryland; and Melissa Carrier, Robert H. Smith School of Business Center for Social Value Creation executive director
  • A networking reception including cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres
  • The latest news on Great Expectations, The Campaign for Maryland, which has exceeded $600 million of the $1 billion goal

May 8, 2009 —"Transform Your World" Film Festival

Terps do amazing good around the world. Now it’s our chance to tell the story.

Mission: create awareness of social good on campus through student groups ;award groups that inspire social change and are committed to service ;educate students on social entrepreneurship What: Create a short clip (2–5 minutes in length) which creatively illustrates your student groups’ commitment to service and social good. This can be a particular project or an overall representation of what your organization does to help the community and better the world.

Event: Submit your video to us by April 27th. Prizes will be awarded. Film will be posted on YouTube page and displayed at Film Competition on May 8th on McKeldin Mall.
