Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing problems with your
wireless connection we have compiled a list of
things that you should double check in order to make
sure your computer is setup correctly.
- The link
indicator light on the wireless card is active
(applies to external cards only).
- The
wireless icon in the system tray is active (no
red X).
- Open your
Start Menu, click Run... and type command. When
you see C:\> type ipconfig /all.
You should see your wireless card listed. If you
don't, you may need to reinstall your card. If
you do, under the IP Address you should have
either a class 128.8.XXX.XXX or 129.2.XXX.XXX
IP.
- The
wireless network is listed in Network
Connections, is enabled and is active (no red
X).
- Check to
make sure that packets are being sent and
received in the wireless network. Open your
Start Menu, click Network Connections (it may be
under a category named Settings), right-click on
Wireless Network and choose Status.
- There needs
to be a umd network listed in Available
networks. To check this, right-click on Wireless
Network in Network Connections and choose View
Available Networks.
- The signal
strength needs to be Good, Very Good, or
Excellent.
- Make sure
that you have all firewall software turned off.
- Wired
Equivalency Privacy (WEP) is disabled.
- Your
wireless card is configured to obtain an IP
address automatically using DHCP.
- The
Authentication page needs to appear correctly.
If it doesn't try opening a web browser window
and going to
https://ptx-vernier-cs.net.umd.edu/logon or
http://1.1.1.1
- The
Directory ID information you entered to
authenticate is correct. The
University of
Maryland Directory page can help with this.
There you will be able to find out your
Directory ID and/or reset your password using
your SID/UMID and PIN.
