There are only
three steps involved in
connecting to the Smith wireless
network: Installation,
Configuration,
Authentication
Installation
To connect to
the Smith Wireless Network you
will need a laptop with a
wireless card. No specific
laptop manufacturer is required
however discounted systems are
offered to University members
through
OIT Purchasing. If your laptop
did not
come with an internal wireless
card already installed, you will have to buy an external
one. The only wireless card
requirement is that it meets the
802.11b standard. You will then
need to install your wireless
card following the card
manufacturer's instructions
exactly.
Configuration
During the card
installation process, you will
be prompted for the SSID or
Network Name. This field should
be set to umd in lowercase. This
information must be configured
properly in order to connect to
the Smith wireless network.
Authentication
With your
wireless card installed and
configured simply open a web
browser and you should see the
new authentication page. From
here simply log in using your
Directory ID information. If you
are unsure what your
Directory ID is, you
may look it up at
http://www.ldap.umd.edu. You
will need your SID/UMID and PIN.
Here are some details and screen
shots of the
authentication system.
