Check Your Email
Access your email anywhere that has internet access without having to install
the Notes client software by using the
eSmith Portal.
Alternately, for webmail access, just go to
http://mail.rhsmith.umd.edu and if you
want to check any of your old archived emails, click
here. Update Your Profile
Each Notes account has a profile
located in the BMGT Address Book. This profile is used by administrative
units and academic departments in the School. Please keep your
information up-to-date so that other faculty, staff and students can
locate your office, phone number, or email address. Please visit
Updating
Your Profile
for instructions if you need help. Forwarding Notes Email
To set a forwarding address, add it to your
profile.
Access your Lotus mail with other mail clients
Other clients may be configured to access your Notes email.
This page will help with server settings to POP
or IMAP your mail.
Postini - Spam filter
Postini is a SPAM filtering service that is provided with your Smith
Notes
account. If you have a Smith Lotus Notes account,
your Postini
account has already been set up for you with default settings to begin filtering
spam and viruses. You do not need to do anything to begin using this
service. Once it begins filtering, you will receive a quarantine
message weekly. You can check anytime to see that it hasn't caught
any mail that wasn't really SPAM. Postini is a flexible product
that puts the user in control of spam and viruses.
Blackberry
The Blackberry
device is used by the Business School to connect to email, calendar, to
do lists, and personal address book through Lotus Notes
and a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server)wirelessly. Phone service is also available with this device through Nextel/Sprint.
Request a Notes Account
Some researchers, contract staff, or visitors who do not go through
our Human Resources department will not receive an account
automatically. The sponsoring department will have to fill out an
account request form. Once a
New Account Request form
is filled out, it will take about 2 - 3 days for an account to be
created.
During the account creation process, we will be verifying your
affiliation with the Business School from the information on the form
and will contact you using the alternate email address entered in the
form. |
Lotus Notes ClientAll computers in Van Munching Hall
(faculty/staff PCs and the computer lab PCs) have Lotus Notes installed.
If you want to install the Lotus Notes client on another PC, the
software can be obtained in the Office
of Smith IT, suite 3520 VMH. You'll need the CD and a copy of some
of the files on your K: drive in order to complete the installation, so
please download and read through this
Notes Installation Document before installing. You do not have to use the Lotus Notes Client to access your email
and calendar. You can use the
iNotes web
interface or configure a third-party email client, like Outlook.
(Note: the Helpdesk is not staffed to provide support for any
third-party email client). Maintaining Your
Mail Size
When your mailfile is close to
the quota, you must reduce it's size.
Large mailfiles are in danger of
becoming corrupt and will slow down your Notes
performance. Some ways to reduce your mailfile:
- Delete everything in your Notes Trash
folder.
- Delete or archive your Sent folder.
- Delete most or all attachments.
- Contact the Helpdesk and ask them to
compact your mailfile
after performing any cleanup
activity. The size of your
mailfile will not reflect your
cleanup efforts until this is done!
Archiving Your Mail
All Faculty and Staff with mail on the Notes server
has companion space on the Domino
Archive server. You have access to
that file from your Notes client, or
from iNotes. Anywere that you have
internet access you can have access to
old mail. It is stored away from
your active mailfile to keep performance
of the mailserver up and potential for
corruption down. Please see the
Archiving
FAQs for information about the
policy and procedures on Archiving.
Copying Your Mail File
If you ever need to read your email
without being connected to the Notes
server see how to
copy
your mail file. NOTE: You
must have a copy of the Notes client
installed to read this file later,
but you do not need to be connected to a
server or have an active Notes account.
This is most helpful to those preparing
to leave the Business School, but who
want to take their entire mail file with
them for future reference.
