Accounts

The UMD campus directory account is used for accessing the research servers. Once the account is created, machine can be accessed by ssh or sftp; e.g. ssh username@ alex2.umd.edu.

Please send e-mail to vinesh@rhsmith.umd.edu for access to the servers with the following information:

--A brief description of the research project

--HW requirements like how much memory, CPU and storage requirements

--Duration of the project

--Software requirements

--Level of familiarity with UNIX/Linux, training needs etc.

Usage Policies

As a general rule, users should not run more than two computation-intensive jobs at the same time. Explicit permissions should be sought and obtained before any users wish to simultaneously run three or more such jobs at any given time. Some special software may have more restricted quota. The above rules do not apply to small jobs that can be completed within a few minutes or those that take minimal amount of CPU.
