Student Technology Information
The Smith School currently does not require any
specific computer equipment. The recommendations of the ACT
program (see below) are sufficient for classes taught at the Business
School.
Purchasing
Special deals on Dell and Apple computers -
campus link to ACT, Academic Computing for Terps. Students are
encouraged to purchase one from this program. The discounts are
substantial, they come loaded with a UMCP software image, and the
hardware is fully supported at the OIT central Helpdesk.

Secure your PC
Whatever you buy, keeping your computer secure takes vigilance. For
our suggestions visit Smith IT
security pages.
If you have any other questions, or think your system has been compromised,
contact the Smith IT Help Desk.
Printers
There are networked printers in each open lab in VMH. They use the
campus Pay for Print system. For more information about Pay for Print,
please see OIT's Pay for
Print information
When printing in an open lab, please be considerate of your peers.
- Reserve large print jobs (50 pages or more) for times when
the lab is not busy.
- Discard your unwanted pages in the appropriate recycling
containers.
- Print jobs not picked up may be thrown away at any time.
If output is unsatisfactory, bring your pages to 3520 and we will either
credit your account or replace the print job with satisfactory quality output.
Loaner Equipment
Undergrad students may borrow equipment from Smith IT ONLY when it is needed
for a class project or Smith organization event. Borrowed equipment
must be requested by a Faculty or Staff member. The
student may pick it up from 3520 if the Faculty/Staff member indicates that in
their request.
MBAs may borrow available equipment for a class session. They will be
required to leave their student ID while the equipment is out.
