Standard Hardware
Hardware from several vendors is evaluated each summer. Special prices are
negotiated, and standard desktops and laptops are chosen in preparation for the
upcoming school year. New full-time faculty receive one of
these systems upon their arrival. Newly hired staff
inherit the equipment assigned to their position. Equipment is updated
for full-time faculty and staff by Smith IT on a 3-4 year rotation when funds
are available.
"Standard" systems are the only systems that our Helpdesk can fully

If you wish to purchase an additional computer for your home or
office using University funds
you are urged to take advantage of the bulk purchase price that we arrange and
get one of these systems. Please contact the Helpdesk if you wish to purchase
one.
NOTE: The office of Smith IT maintains a rotating cycle for
upgrading the work computer provided by this office. We do not plan the upgrade
of any computer purchased by individuals or departments.
Using Personal funds for a computer purchase
If anyone affiliated with UMCP will be using personal funds to purchase a
system and wants the best discounts and information about campus compatibility
please refer to OIT's site, www.act.umd.edu.
Students are encouraged to purchase one from this program. The discounts are
substantial, they come loaded with a UMCP software image, and the hardware is
fully supported at the OIT central Helpdesk. Note: You cannot use University
funds at this site.
