Getting Started with technology - New Staff at R.H. Smith

Before You Arrive
When You Arrive
Before You Leave

Welcome to the Smith School!  Before you begin your work with us, the Office of Smith IT will work with your supervisor and Human Resources to have equipment and accounts set up for you.  This page has links to information about accounts and equipment at Smith.

  1. Your Smith accounts will have already been set up for you. These will be delivered to you in Human Resources when you sign paperwork there.  For security reasons, accounts must be picked up in person.  The account sheet you receive has links to a lot of good information.
  2. Review the New Faculty/Staff Orientation document.  This used to be printed and handed out in something called 'the packet', but in an effort to save some trees, we're attaching the latest version here for anyone to review anytime.  There is a link to this on that account sheet we just mentioned in #1.
  3. Update your Notes profile (You will need your iNotes account information to do this)  Your profile determines how you will be listed in the Business School Directory.  It is very important to keep this up to date!  For directions, click here.
  4. Set up your campus UMID username and password. You may do this after HR gets you into their  payroll database. (more information about this and other accounts can be located on our accounts page) Then make sure your campus Profile is correct.
  5. Check the equipment set up in your office.  If there are any questions or concerns about it, please contact Smith IT by coming to suite 3520 in Van Munching Hall during business hours, calling the HelpDesk at 301-405-2269, or emailing helpme@rhsmith.umd.edu anytime.  The Helpdesk Manager is Tom O'Rourke, his group manages desktops.
  6. Request Software for Your Computer - The Helpdesk maintains a standard suite of licensed software on faculty and staff office computers. Please see our Supported Software page to review which software is provided standard on all machines and which software is available upon request. If you wish additional software you may request it by indicating on the computer request form. If licenses or software must be purchased, we will work with you to determine a funding source for the software.
  7. Familiarize yourself with our website - http://rhsmith.umd.edu/smithit - and provide feedback regularly.
  8. All Instructors:  Request Software Needed in the Labs and Classrooms - This form must always be used to request software installations on any classroom or lab pc used for Business School classes - including remote sites

Normal deadlines for classroom software image requests are:

January 6 for Spring semester updates and

May 10 for Fall semester updates.

We do everything we can to make exceptions outside of these dates for anyone hired after these deadlines.  Help us out though and please submit the form as soon as you can to allow us the time we need to purchase, install, test and deploy the updated software images.

  9. Instructors: Set up your Courses in BlackboardCourse sites must be requested each semester.  The campus ELMS course request form can be used as soon as you have a campus Directory ID login (check with Human Resources about the availability of this UMID).  If there is some reason you cannot log into this site yet, please email bbhelp@rhsmith.umd.edu.
  10. Request a Mobile Pone if desired. More information can be found on our Mobile Phone information page.

When you leave the Smith School your Lotus Notes email account will be disabled 30 days from your last day of employment.  We asked that you please make sure to remove any important personal information as you will not have access to it after this date.  Your Novell access will also be disabled so please remove any personal data from your network drives.

When you leave, you will also need to schedule and exit interview with the HR office.  You will need to turn in the following items:

  • Office keys
  • ID Card
  • Parking Permit
  • Equipment purchased with any University Funds (Blackberry/Cell Phone/Laptop/etc.) - yes, this means equipment purchased with grants and overhead funds too.  Talk to your Business Office representative for clarification about State regulations about ownership of computer related equipment.

You will also need to take care of any leave payback, loans, and leave settlements at this time.  If you have any questions regarding the exit interview, please contact Bobvita Salters at x59571 or bsalters@rhsmith.umd.edu.

For questions regarding the disabling of your email account, please contact the Office of Smith IT at x52296 or at helpme@rhsmith.umd.edu.
