Before you arrive
Welcome to the Smith School! Before you begin your work with us, the Office
of Smith IT will work with your supervisor and Human Resources to have equipment
and accounts set up for you. E-mail and Novell accounts are created before your
arrival and will be delivered to you by Human Resources. Please go to our
Accounts Overview Page
for detailed information about Smith and Campus accounts. If you are a staff
member or PhD student, your new department chair or supervisor will inform Smith
IT of equipment needs and we will have it set up in your office before you
arrive.
- Order Your Computer (New Faculty Only) - New Faculty will receive
a standard desktop or laptop computer as listed on the current
Standard
Hardware page. If you require peripherals or other upgrades such as more
memory, you can fund the difference from the current standard desktop price
with a department account number or personal funding. Please fill out
this form to indicate your selection and additions or upgrades needed.
We will work with you to obtain an appropriate system before your arrival.
If you have any questions about this procedure, please contact Mary Maxson
at 301-405-8997.
- Request Software for Your Computer - The Helpdesk
maintains a standard suite of licensed software on faculty and staff office
computers. Please see our Supported Software page to review which
software is provided standard on all machines and which software is
available upon request. If you wish additional software you may request it
by indicating on the computer request form. If licenses or software must be
purchased, we will work with you to determine a funding source for the
software.
- Request Software Needed in the Labs and Classrooms
-
This form must always be used to request software installations on
any classroom or lab pc used for Business School classes - including remote
sites. Classroom software images are very complex and take a long time to
create and test. Of course, they are locked down to prevent tampering and
are usually only updated in preparation for a new semester.
Normal deadlines
for classroom software image requests are:
January 6 for Spring semester updates and
May 10 for Fall semester updates.
We do everything we can to make exceptions outside of these dates for anyone
hired after these deadlines. Help us out though and please submit the
form as soon as you can to allow us the time we
need to purchase, install, test and deploy the updated software images. - Review the New
Faculty/Staff Orientation document.
- Set up your Courses in Blackboard -
Courses must be requested each semester. Smith Faculty may use one of
two forms to request courses. There is a
campus ELMS course request form that
can be used for most courses that have been listed in Testudo or your UMEG
account. You will find it when you log into Blackboard in the
"Common Tasks for Instructors" area. Any UMCP Faculty can
use the ELMS form. Business School Faculty
may also
click here to use this form which offers more flexibility in the following situations:
- When you're teaching a cross-listed course and want to combine
different course IDs into one course
- You are a new hire and don't have a campus Directory ID yet
- When a Staff member requests a course on behalf of a faculty member
- When you have special requests
When you arrive
- Your Smith accounts will have already been set up for
you. Once the Office of Smith IT receives notification of a new hire, we
work quickly to set up your Notes and Novell accounts. Stop by suite 3520
in Van Munching Hall between 10 AM and 5 PM, Monday - Friday to receive your
new accounts from Smith IT staff. For security reasons,
accounts must be picked up in person. Until then any email sent to you@rhsmith.umd.edu
will be forwarded to you at the email provided by Human Resources.
-
Sit with IT Staff for about 20 minutes to check accounts, receive a brief
overview of Smith IT accounts and services, and review the
New Faculty Technology
Checklist.
