Holly MannHolly Mann - Director of Smith IT - The Boss

As the Director for the Office of Smith IT, Holly is responsible for implementing technology strategy, managing the use, deployment and support of technology throughout the Smith School. She establishes operational objectives, policies and procedures, oversees budget planning, and sets both tactical and strategic priorities for the department.

Ernie Soffronoff - Associate Director - Enterprise Infrastructure

As the Associate Director, Ernie oversees computer and network operations, enterprise architecture planning, and research and development work for Smith IT. This includes systems such as Lotus email and workgroup applications; file and print services; online Windows applications and lab and classroom imaging; and the UNet, Alumni and MBA Networth information portals.

Charles (Chuck) LaHaie - Assistant Director - Financial Markets and Research Labs

Chuck is responsible for procurement, installation, maintenance, and development of all financial and accounting software products and databases for the Smith School. These include real-time services (Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg) and other products (CRSP, Compustat, Mergent, S&P's Capital IQ, Thomson One Banker, ThomsonOne.com, Datastream, etc.). He is also responsible for consulting with and educating of faculty and all students on how to use these products and find information, and assisting the faculty in integrating the products and services into the curriculum. Chuck also monitors and tracks all Smith I.T. budget expenditures. 

The Academic Technology team helps Faculty and Staff use instructional technology such as Blackboard, 'clickers' and tablet computers in the classroom.  Our team is responsible for the Smith IT website, new Faculty IT Orientation and are System Administrators for the Business School Blackboard presence. We also oversee the software installations in VMH classrooms and open labs. 


Mary Maxson - Academic Technology

As the Instructional Technology Team Manager, Mary works on initiatives to help Faculty and Staff utilize existing technology resources effectively, and makes recommendations when existing resources don't meet a need. She works with other groups to develop and maintain the software image in the classrooms and labs.

Alice (Hua) Zhang - Blackboard & Web System Administrator

Alice provides day to day support for Blackboard online course system, responds to user requests from course setting up to various questions and issues. She maintains online documents for Blackboard support website and Smith IT website together with other team members. She is also responsible for Smith school Web server access requests.

Theresa    Ewing - Academic Technology Coordinator

Theresa serves as the main contact for new faculty and staff accounts.  Through the New Hires process she makes sure that accounts are created and distributed to incoming faculty and staff. In addition, she assists in the day to day operations of Smith IT by scheduling and coordinating training classes and meetings; maintaining documentation for Smith IT; drafting communications for the community; and managing content for the Smith IT website and IT News Blog.

The A/V team make sure all the classroom and conference rooms are in working order at the beginning of the day, during the day, and at the end of the day.  They are the first to arrive and the last to leave.  These are the people that work in the background and make sure any special event in VMH goes smoothly.


Ben     Rose - Audio Visual Operations Engineer

Ben is responsible for the daily Audio Visual support activities of the Smith School. These activities include supervision of the Audio Visual Team which includes fulltime and student technicians; coordination of routine and unscheduled maintenance and repairs; Technical contact for special events, programs or other events with special AV needs; Smith school technical advisor on matters concerning VMH original wing technology upgrade project and the VMH Annex building project. In a new role, Ben is co-supervisor for the technical staff that is housed at the Ronald Reagan Building.

Greg     Hull

Greg is one of the full time audio visual personnel. He also provides helpdesk support, server and network support. One of his main areas of support is for the Executive Education Program. He provides troubleshooting knowledge and experience to Smith IT. Greg is cheerful, not as much as Joel, but more than Ernie. Greg also digitizes classroom recordings and makes them available on the web for students and faculty to view or transfers the videos onto DVD.

Primary duty is to support the electronic audio visual and computer technology used by the Robert H. Smith School of Business instructors to teach students in all classrooms, conference rooms, labs and auditoriums within Van Munching Hall. Such classroom technology support can entail troubleshooting of systems, shared resource systems operation, equipment maintenance, end user training, end user system assistance, repairs to the component level, and system upgrades.

Harold Owens

His current duties include technician training and supervision, classroom training and support, special event operations, documentation, and support of the weekend EMBA programs. Harold enjoys helping to quickly and happily meet the needs of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Robert H. Smith School of Business. While as a student at the University of Maryland, Harold worked as a part-time student tech. at the Smith IT helpdesk. But since he has graduated he has moved on up in the world.

DTOs are the technology ambassadors between Smith IT and the departments in the Smith school.  They are the "go to" person for all technology needs for each department that they work with.


Holly Zhang - Supply Chain and LBPP

Holly is in charge of the Supply Chain lab and applications installed there.  She is available to all LBPP faculty to discuss discipline specific technology needs.

Vinesh Gupta - Marketing and M&O

Vinesh's ongoing responsibilities include project management for IT projects, research infrastructure development, survey methodologies, social science research network paper series, and Grid Computing for the business school.

These are the people that work behind the scenes.  They make sure all the servers that keep the Smith school running are secure and update-to-date.  Such servers include the Smith School website, Domino servers (RHSmith email, UNET, Networth, etc.), MySmith portal, Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), and lots more.

Chris is responsible for the Lotus infrastructure, including email, websites and collaboration tools such as Quickplace and Sametime.

Roy Corona - Network Services Manager

Roy is involved with the day to day operation of network infrastructure, server maintenance, server upgrades, new server installations of Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Linux, and application operations for the Business School. A few of these applications would be Active Directory, Netware and Blackberry Enterprise Server.

His projects improve the business functions in the office and the MBA experience for the students.  Some of his current projects include, digital transfer of application data to the UMD Graduate school, on-line payment process for deposits, and implementing a eNewsletter system.

The Help Desk is the main point of contact for any trouble you may have with your computer or with Smith accounts.

Tom has been our Help Desk Manager since 2005.  He is responsible for the 1st and 2nd level technology support of the Smith School of Business on all campuses including College Park, Shady Grove, Washington D.C., Baltimore and international locations.

Jesse Veihmeyer - Helpdesk Supervisor,  Blackberry Specialist

In his capacity as IT Coordinator, he handles and/or escalates trouble calls that come to the Smith IT Help Desk via phone, email or walk-ins  from new account requests to wireless troubleshooting. He and Joel are the Smith IT Blackberry Specialists. They also are the first line experts for hardware and software assistance, network issues, and application and internet support.  In addition, Jesse also directly mentors, trains and supervises the Smith IT Help Desk team of student technicians.

Joel rules technology with an iron fist. When Joel is not busy intimidating computer glitches he spends his time managing and coordinating help requests, email accounts, mobile devices, network connections, student technicians, and free food availability.

Arimah Williams - Baltimore IT Support

Arimah's duties include overseeing the installation and maintenance of hardware and software, troubleshooting hardware, software and network problems, and supporting and maintaining in-house audio-visual equipment all at the Baltimore campus. This includes operating, maintaining, repairing, and ensuring their optimal performance. As an IT coordinator Arimah also provides end-user training and assistance when required.

As IT Coordinator for the Ronald Reagan Building in DC, a site under direction of the IT Director for the Robert H. Smith School of Business, Michael works with faculty, staff and students providing IT support including computer hardware and audio visual issues.
