Remote Access –
Accessing Your Files on Network Drive from Anywhere on the Internet
There are several options
available for accessing your files from outside of
Smith locations.
The easiest way to access files from
off-campus is to use the
eSmith
portal's Windows Applications feature. This
will let you run a copy of Windows Explorer with
all of your Netware drives mapped, and you can
simply drag and drop files in Explorer to make a
local copy. You can even use eSmith to open
files directly on the server for editing.

Windows Applications.

You can also use an FTP client to make the
connection mbsdata.umd.edu. A “real” FTP client
has the advantage that it can both upload and
download files, so you could make a download to
the machine you are working on, make edits, and
when done use the FTP client again to upload the
file back to your Netware drive. FTP clients
include the WS-FTP client installed on most
Smith laptops.

Finally, the Netware client (as used on office
computers) can be used remotely. It will
work from a desktop computer at home or from a
laptop. The downside of the Netware client
is that it is somewhat complicated to install
and could potentially conflict with an existing
network client on a computer. The upside
is that you will get your drive mappings and run
the login script, and can get almost exactly the
same convenience as working on an office or lab
PC. Click here for
directions on how to
install Netware Client.
