Before you arrive
Welcome to the Smith School! Before you begin your work with us, the
Office of Smith IT will work with your supervisor and Human Resources to have
equipment and accounts set up for you. E-mail and Novell accounts are created
before your arrival and will be delivered to you by Human Resources. If you are a staff
member, part-time faculty or PhD student, your new department chair or supervisor will inform Smith
IT of equipment needs and we will have it set up in your office before you
arrive.
- Review the
2009 Faculty/Staff Orientation document and the
Technology
Checklist.

All Instructors: Request Software Needed
in the Labs and Classrooms -
This form
must always be used to request software installations
on any classroom or lab pc used for Business School classes -
including remote sites. Classroom software
images are very complex and take a long time to create and test. Of course,
they are locked down to prevent tampering and are usually only updated in
preparation for a new semester.
Normal deadlines for classroom software image requests are:
January 6 for Spring semester updates and
May 10 for Fall semester updates.
We do everything we can to make exceptions outside of these dates for anyone
hired after these deadlines. Help us out though and please submit the
form as soon as you can to allow us the time we
need to purchase, install, test and deploy the updated software images. -
Order Your Computer (New Full-time Faculty Only) - New Full-time
Faculty will receive a standard desktop or laptop computer as listed on the
current Standard Hardware page from
the Office of Smith IT. If you require peripherals or other upgrades such
as more memory, you can fund the difference with a department account number or
personal funding. Please fill out
this form to indicate your selection and additions or upgrades needed. We
will work with you to obtain an appropriate system before your arrival. If
you have any questions about this procedure, please contact Mary Maxson at
301-405-8997.
- Request Software for Your Computer - The Helpdesk maintains a standard
suite of licensed software on faculty and staff office computers. Please see our
Supported Software page to review
which software is provided standard on all machines and which software is
available upon request. If you wish additional software you may request it by
indicating on the computer request form. If licenses or software must be
purchased, we will work with you to determine a funding source for the software.
When you arrive
- Your Smith accounts will have already been set up for
you. Once the Office of Smith IT receives notification of a new hire, we
work quickly to set up your Notes and Novell accounts. For security reasons, accounts
must be picked up in person in Human Resources. Until then any email sent to
you@rhsmith.umd.edu will be forwarded to you at the email provided by Human
Resources.
-
Sit with IT Staff for about 20 minutes to check accounts, receive a brief
overview of Smith IT accounts and services, and review the
Technology

helpme@rhsmith.umd.edu or
call 301-405-2269 to schedule a time with a staff member.

campus UMID username and
password. (more information about this and other accounts can be located on
our
"accounts" page)
-
Instructors: Set up your Courses in
Blackboard - Course sites must be requested each
semester. The
campus ELMS course request form can be used as soon as you have a campus
UMID login. Tip: If your course is not yet listed in Testudo or UMEG
you can select the link "Request Space for Unlisted Course" at the bottom of
the form.
If there is some
reason you cannot log into the link above yet, please
use
this form instead. -
