Microsoft has been releasing patches for Windows XP
Service Pack 2 to fix this issue, but if you are not letting Windows Update
download and install them, then your machine will not get fixed. It’s easy
to verify that your computer is setup to automatically retrieve and install
these patches, so follow these simple steps:
Open your Control Panel in Windows XP (click Start >
Control Panel) and open the icon for Automatic Updates.
Set the updates to Automatic and to download the
updates Every day at 3:00am.
Then click OK.
All you have to do is log out of your computer (but
don’t shut it down) in the evening for the next few days and all the patches
will download and install. If your Windows XP was not already updated with
Service Pack 2, it will download and install as well.
Unfortunately Windows 2000 is no longer supported by
Microsoft so they are not releasing an automatic patch for this version of
Windows. However they did release information as to what you can change on
your computer manually to make it work. We have put these changes together
in a patch that you can download and run on your computer. You can get the
patch at:
http://bmgt5-notes.rhsmith.umd.edu/dst2007/dst2007.zip
Unzip the file into a temporary directory on your
computer and run the dst2007.cmd file by double-clicking it. The patch
should only take a second to install. Reboot your computer when complete.
These versions of Windows are also now unsupported by
Microsoft. The patch for Windows 2000 may work for your
computer, otherwise you will have to source your own solution to the
DST 2007 issue.
There are two ways you can patch your other Microsoft
applications such as Word, Outlook etc. First you can go to the Microsoft
DST Help website and use their wizard to determine what products you have
that need patching and where to get patches. You can find that website at:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst
Alternatively, for software that Microsoft has released
patches for through the Microsoft Update website, you can go there and
install Microsoft Update (similar to Windows Update except it can keep more
products current with patches). You can find that website at:
