One of the most meaningful contributions an alumnus can make to the Smith School is the gift of your time and expertise through the MBA Alumni Mentor Program.

The program gives MBA students the opportunity to obtain practical career guidance from talented professionals who share personal and professional insights into their fields and provide information about career opportunities. Throughout the year the Smith School provides opportunities for mentors and students to connect at networking and social events. Levels of involvement are flexible, for the convenience of mentors.

Smith has created a multi-level program that makes the most of the varying levels of experience of our younger and older alumni. MBA students connect with recent alumni mentors. These young professionals are in turn mentored by more experienced alumni. This arrangement allows for relationship-building that continues during a student’s business education and beyond.

Through Smith’s Alumni Mentor Program, alumni are building a community of encouragement and support that challenges both recent and more established Smith grads to reach for their goals. If you are interested in becoming an Alumni Mentor, please contact Michele Frazier at 301.405.2449, or e-mail

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our alumni and friends, the 2004-2005 school year brought a host of enhancements to the Smith School and its programs. Robert H. Smith’s gift of $30 million to the University of Maryland will benefit the Smith School immensely, as we educate a new generation of leaders for the digital economy.

Such remarkable support strengthens the Smith School’s commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities that spring from a global, digital and increasingly interconnected economy. Our strengths in integrating fundamental business principles with the most cutting-edge e-business applications puts us in a unique position to pioneer solutions and prepare leaders for tomorrow’s dynamic and unpredictable business world.

The Smith School’s 2004-2005 Honor Roll recognizes the contributions that have made this innovative teaching and groundbreaking research possible. This year’s accomplishments include:

  • Expansion of Smith Executive MBA program in China with a new offering in Shanghai and launched a global Executive MBA program in partnership with GSBA in Switzerland;

  • Expansion of Smith School Fellows program, which will transform the undergraduate experience;

  • Establishment of the Center for Health Information and Decision Systems;

  • Start of an ambitious renovation and expansion of Van Munching Hall.

Heartfelt thanks to the alumni, students, businesses and organizations, faculty and staff, and friends who invested in the Smith School last year. Because of your generosity, we were able to provide scholarships, purchase technology, start new programs and strengthen existing ones.

In this report we particularly recognize your financial support, but financial support is just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past year our alumni and friends have also supported us in a host of ways as volunteers, mentors, sponsors and partners. We acknowledge your invaluable contributions with appreciation and gratitude.

With the support of alumni and friends around the world, the Smith School will continue to make a real impact on a global scale.

Warm regards,
Joanne Ferchland-Parella
Assistant Dean for External Relations
