The Admissions Committee's decision to admit an applicant is based on an evaluation of the candidate's potential to be successful in the Smith online MBA program, his or her ability to contribute to the perspective of the class, and Smith's ability to accommodate a limited number of students in each cohort.
Criteria for Admission
Professional Work Experience
Multiple years of professional experience strengthens an applicant's profile and provides an important edge in the admissions process. A minimum of two years of work experience is highly recommended for consideration. An application is not considered complete unless it contains the applicant's resume.
Undergraduate Academic Record
The Admissions Committee looks for applicants who have demonstrated a strong undergraduate academic record. Any graduate coursework will also be taken into account during the admissions process. To apply, the applicant must have a four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 2.80/4.00.
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
Although cut-off scores are not implemented in the admissions process, it is expected that the applicant will show excellence through the GMAT (or GRE) score.
One Letter of Recommendation
A recommendation should be solicited from an individual who can objectively comment on an applicant's performance in an academic or professional environment.
There are two essay questions on the application. The Admissions Committee looks for well written essays that clearly and thoughtfully answer each question. Be sure to check for spelling and grammatical errors.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
The University of Maryland at College Park requires any applicant who has not completed a university degree in a country in which English is the principal language (such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand) to take the TOEFL.
