Is this an accredited degree I'll receive?

Yes. The Smith School of Business is accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and your diploma will read Masters of Science in Business and Management.

Are the program professors Smith School faculty?

Yes, the program is taught by many of the same world-class faculty who teach in Smith's top-ranked MBA programs, along with industry practitioners.

What kind of access will I have to professors?

All professors will be available to meet during office hours and for scheduled appointments. They will also be available via email and phone.

How much of the program is done online?

None of the course work is done online. All teaching happens in the classroom. Groups, however, may choose to work virtually between classes. Virtual team interaction and group collaboration are facilitated through an online course management tool.

Are there electives?

Yes. Students are required to complete 12 credit hours as selectives/electives.

How can I learn more about the program?

Where are classes held?

The program is held on the main University of Maryland campus in College Park, Maryland.

What are the required qualifications for admissions to the program?

Is the application online, and is there an application fee?

Yes, the entire application process is online and the application is $75.

Do I need to submit an essay?

Yes, the written essay should articulate your qualifications and motivation for pursuing advanced education.

What is the video response?

The purpose of the video response is to assess your business communication skills and is a way for the admissions committee to get to know you in addition to your written essay.  A link to the video with instructions and details are available once you select your program of interest.  You do not need special software, just a computer or device that has a camera/webcam to create your video response.

Do I have to take the GMAT or GRE?

Yes. Because of the quantitative aspect of the program, you must submit the GMAT or GRE.  Generally, students who have produced GMAT scores in the 600s or above have been successful in the program.  At least one official score must be submitted.

Do I need to submit a transcript(s) for each college or university attended?

Yes, the online application allows you to upload a scanned official transcript(s) for each college or university attended. If the official transcript where you received your degree does not state the degree was conferred, please also upload an official diploma or official copy of your degree received (most schools already list the conferred degree on the transcript). If you are formally admitted to the University of Maryland, you will be required to submit an official transcript at new student orientation. If your transcript is not in English, please also an official transcript translated into English.

Who should provide my letter of recommendation?

A supervisor within your organization or from a professor familiar with your work.

Am I required to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

International applicants who have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from one of the countries listed here are waived of this requirement. You must have attended classes for at least 2 years and received the degree in one of these countries to be exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.  If you earned your degree from a country not on the exemption list, then you must complete the TOEFL or IELTS.  The minimum score required on the TOEFL is 100, and 7 on the IELTS.

What is the deadline for application?

How much does the program cost?

Tuition rate is dependent on your residency status in the state of Maryland. If you qualify for in-state tuition rates, your cost will be approximately $46,000. If you qualify for out-of-state tuition rates, your cost will be approximately $55,000. These amounts do not include books and additional course materials that are required to attend class. These tuition figures are based on fall 2014 costs and will change for the fall 2015 term.

Is financial aid available?

Financial aid assistance is available through loans. Go to the University of Maryland’s Office of Financial Aid Web site for more information. We do not offer any scholarships or assistantships for students in the Master of Science program.

Can international students enroll in the Master of Science: Information Systems program?

Yes. International students can enroll in the Master of Science: Information Systems program.  Additionally, the program is STEM certified, which allows eligible F-1 visa students a total of 29 months of OPT following graduation.

Can current Master of Science: Information Systems students apply to the MBA program and graduate with a dual degree in MBA/Master of Science: Information Systems?

Yes. Students already in the Master of Science: Information Systems program may opt to apply to the MBA program, but must complete the entire MBA application process. If a student in the Master of Science: Information Systems program is admitted into the MBA program, he/she must take part in all pre-MBA program activities (i.e. orientation, workshops, etc.). Prospective students interested in the MBA/Master of Science: Information Systems are highly recommended to apply to the MBA program first.
