Smith EMBA Wins at Smith's Social Enterprise Symposium

Smith hosted its 5th Annual Social Enterprise Symposium on March 1, 2013. This event was its largest to date with approximately 1,000 guests attending keynote presentations, a series of breakout sessions and workshops, the annual No Limits Social Impact Pitch Competition, and an evening networking reception. One of those in attendance, Mondiu Ladejobi (EMBA 12), was not only a spectator, but also a winner of the No Limits Social Impact Pitch Competition. Mondiu secured $3,000 toward his venture, Payvius, a low-cost, mobile money transfer service providing secure global money transfers from a U.S. sender to any mobile phone in Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal is to provide recipients with the opportunity to build credit in developing economies. Read more about the recent symposium.

Smith EMBA Alumnus Announces 2nd Annual Seek & Find Dr. Bear Family Walk

Pete Plotas, EMBA 9, and his wife Alison invite you to join other EMBA alumni and their families on Saturday, May 18 for the 2nd Annual Seek and Find Dr. Bear Family Walk in support of Children's National Medical Center. It is a one-mile, “at your own pace” family charity walk on the Rockville Millennium Trail to find Dr. Bear and other surprises hiding on the trail. This year you can join in the walk and activities any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A fun Saturday has been planned that you won’t want to miss, including pictures with Dr. Bear, face painting, music, prizes, food trucks and more!

Can’t attend? You can participate virtually! Register to receive your T-shirt by mail. You can show your support from afar and participate in our virtual walk.

Launched in 2011, the BE GREAT Foundation enables advancements in curative treatments for children with immune deficiency by supporting improvements in bone marrow transplantation, medical equipment and educational programs for parents. BE GREAT is dedicated to Alexander James Plotas, who died on September 2011 at 13 months of age due to respiratory complications from a severe form of immune deficiency after a successful bone marrow transplant. Visit www.BeGreatFoundation.org for details and to register.

Upcoming Events

April 24, 2013, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Annual Spring EMBA Alumni, Current & Prospective Student Happy Hour
Save the Date
Our annual Spring EMBA alumni event has been continually growing since our first session 5 years ago. Last year's attendance saw the largest gathering of Smith's EMBA community members to date. Networking opportunities combined with a panel discussion of alums moderated by a Smith faculty member provides a valuable evening of problem-solving thought leadership. This year's topic will be how to assess and recruit top talent to your organization.

April 27, 2013 , 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Women EMBA Alumna, Current & Prospective Student Brunch
Save the Date
Our most recent cohort (EMBA 13) is made up of 37 percent women. This is higher than the typical EMBA/MBA classroom, but it is not reflective of the demographic in the region or the work force. We invite our women EMBA alumni and current students to join us in a recruiting brunch to help encourage the most competitive female applicants the area has to offer to consider Smith for their EMBA.

May 3 to May 4, 2013
EMBA Alumni Gettysburg Leadership Experience
Save the Date
The two-day program will be led by Gettysburg experts and Smith faculty. We will spend Friday on the battlefield, walking in the footsteps of leaders and reviewing their leadership and resource allocation decisions. In the evening, we will hold a reception and networking event. We’ll wrap things up on Saturday morning with a session on thought leadership.
