For Assistant Director of MBA/MS Admissions was like coming
home. As a University of Maryland alumnus, Kecia is certainly
no stranger to this campus. I recently sat down with Kecia
to find out more about her and her responsibilities at Maryland.
NR: What is your background?
KH: My most recent position was as Executive Associate
of Recruitment and Retention for the School of Engineering
and Applied Science at The George Washington University. I
was solely responsible for all aspects of recruitment and
retention of students in the engineering programs. I have
a background in career counseling and development and am currently
pursuing my doctorate in HR Development. I am originally from
Boston but have spent many years in the DC Metropolitan area.
NR: What brought you to Maryland?
KH: Having been involved with engineering, I felt
that working with business would be an exciting change of
pace with a whole new perspective. I think it will allow me
the opportunity for personal growth, to be more part of a
team and not a one-woman "show." It's a program
that I believe in - with great faculty and wonderful students.
I not only went to Maryland for undergrad but also worked
at Maryland in the Department of Women Studies and really
enjoyed my experiences here.
NR: What are you responsibilities as Assistant Director
of MBA/MS Admissions?
KH: My responsibilities involve recruitment, outreach
and marketing of full-time programs. Some of the programs
I oversee are the host program, visitors program, online newsletter,
About Smith, call nights, online chats, as well as admitted
student receptions.
NR: What are some of the goals you strive for in your
position?
KH: Overall, I hope to continue to help it (Smith)
grow upwards. I am always looking for new ways to bring students
to campus as well as increase the number of women students
and other underrepresented groups. I think my job goes beyond
recruiting to helping students understand personal implications
of pursuing an MBA/MS.
NR: Do you have any other thoughts about R.H. Smith?
KH: Well, I am always seeking new ideas for recruiting
and retention, and am always interested in students' opinions.
I have an open door policy and welcome students to share their
ideas and thoughts with me.
