AdVENTURE Challenge: China

Course Description

Think Amazing Race meets venture creation. The experience will take students from Shanghai to Beijing. Along the way, students will earn points as we visit Chinese startups, multinational corporations, venture capital firms and cultural sites like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. The challenge will culminate with a final competition at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management. Students compete for cash prizes alongside peers from Smith, Guanghua and other Chinese business schools, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

Students from around the world are invited to participate in the 9th Annual China Business Model Competition

BUSI 788K: This 2-credit course is about developing and presenting new venture business models relevant to the Chinese market. It involves working with Chinese team members to develop a business idea using the business model canvas. Canvas presentations will occur in the US and in Beijing, China. Pitches will be based on a business problem. The course is required for participation in AdVENTURE Challenge: China. By registering for this course, you will automatically be registered for the two-credit global studies course to Beijing and Shanghai in May (Summer I), led by the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship.

BUSI 798K: 2 credit course for travel component to China May 23rd – May 31st.

Entrepreneurial Skills

  • Develop a business model that is based in China or leverages Chinese resources and present it to expert  judges for feedback for a chance at prizes
  • Gain exposure to and interact with local VCs and entrepreneurs through company visits and group meals
  • Learn the complexities of doing a startup in China and in the global economy
  • Compete in an international business model competition

International Experiences

  • Work in a cross-cultural team with Chinese students
  • Experience the Chinese culture through completing fun challenges in Shanghai and Beijing
  • Learn about the Chinese business ecosystem and history through site visits


$2,250 program fee; $250 study abroad fee; and $40 CISI insurance fee. The program fee covers shared hotel room, in-country ground transportation, at least two dinners and cultural activities included in the itinerary.

Not included: international airfare, personal expenses, and most meals.

The $1,000 Dean's Global Scholarship is available to eligible full-time and part-time MBA students who are participating on a UMD program abroad in 2014-15. Only students who have not studied abroad previously on a UMD program are eligible for this $1,000 scholarship. There is no application form required for the scholarship. Instead, it will be automatically applied to your student account after our office has verified in our records that this is your first time studying abroad with UMD.

Application Process

The application process is competitive. Enrollment in AdVENTURE Challenge: China is not guaranteed. Students must apply to be considered in the selection process. The ideal candidate should be entrepreneurial and comfortable with international travel and should also have an intellectual curiosity concerning Chinese culture and business.

Completion of BUSI 660 is preferred. In addition, preference will be given to students who have demonstrated an interest in entrepreneurship, venture creation and the startup ecosystem through coursework or participation in Dingman Center activities or the Entrepreneurship Club.

To apply, students must send their resume and a statement on their background and reasons for taking the course to The Office of Global Initiatives and/or the Dingman Center may conduct interviews to understand each candidate’s skill set and determine fit for the program.
