Bill Mayer Delivers Keynote Speech at
Commencement Congratulations, Smith School
Graduates!
In a lively ceremony on May 22, 2009 at the
Comcast Center, four PhDs, 100 executive
MBAs, 300 MBA/MS, and 825 undergraduates
graduated with business degrees from the
Robert H. Smith School of Business. Former
Smith School Dean William E. Mayer ’66, MBA
’67, delivered the keynote address as
thousands of friends and family members
gathered to cheer on the newest Smith Terp
alumni.

Smith School Expands to Space in
Baltimore BioPark
The Smith School has acquired new space in
Baltimore at the University of Maryland
BioPark. The Smith School is moving its
existing location from the University of
Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) School of
Nursing to expand MBA programs and
partnerships, and to include dedicated space
for alumni offerings in Baltimore. “Today’s
announcement further underscores the
tremendous value the University System of
Maryland (USM) brings to the state, both as
a highly valued educational resource and as
an engine of research and discovery,” said
USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan. “Operating
as a system, with a true statewide presence,
USM is facilitating collaboration between
the highly ranked programs of the Smith
School of Business and the world-class
research programs of UMB to promote
technology transfer and grow Maryland’s
economy.”

Smith School to Hold Executive Coaching
Conference
The Smith School, in partnership with the
Society for Industrial and Organizational
Psychology, will hold a two day Executive
Coaching Conference & Workshop, June 18-19,
including a plenary session, “Coaching for
Success,” with UM Head Basketball Coach Gary

MBAs Participate in Social Venture
Consulting Program
MBA students, faculty and nonprofit leaders
gathered at the Robert H. Smith School of
Business on May 5 to discuss the efforts of
these parties to enhance the future for
several organizations. The presentation was
the culmination of semester-long consulting
projects through the Social Venture
Consulting Program (SVCP), an endeavor of
the
Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship and
newly launched Initiative for
Social Value Creation in partnership
with
Grassroots.org. Twenty-four Smith MBA
student consultants worked with nine
nonprofit and community organizations on
projects ranging from cutting overhead and
raising funds, to marketing and social media
outreach.

UNIVERSITY UPDATE
NSA and DHS Designate the University
of Maryland as 'National Center of Academic
Excellence in Information Assurance
Research'
The National Security Agency (NSA)
and the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) have jointly designated the University
of Maryland as a National Center of Academic
Excellence in Information Assurance
Research. The university will receive the
formal award at the 13th Colloquium for
Information Systems Security Education in
Seattle, Washington on June 3, 2009. The
Smith School's Lawrence Gordon, Ernst &
Young Alumni Professor of Managerial
Accounting and Information Assurance, and
Martin Loeb, Chair and Professor of
Accounting and Information Assurance and
Deloitte & Touche LLP Faculty Fellow,
participated in the development of the
university’s application.

Six University of Maryland Students
Win Fulbright Awards
Six undergraduate and graduate
students at the University of Maryland have
been awarded Fulbright grants for 2009
academic year -- more than in any previous
year. The
Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which is
sponsored by the U.S. Department of State,
is the nation's largest international
exchange fellowship program, providing
approximately 1,500 research and English
teaching fellowships each year. It is
designed to give recent graduates and
graduate students opportunities for
international experience, personal
enrichment and an open exchange of ideas
with citizens of other nations.

Mote Elected to National Academy
of Engineering Post
University of Maryland President
C.D. Mote, Jr. has been elected to serve
a four-year term as treasurer of the
National Academy of Engineering (NAE),
continuing his years of service to the
organization.

Don Riley, professor of information
systems,
has been asked by the
National Academy of Sciences to co-chair a
new working group on IT infrastructure in
developing countries, with an initial focus
on Africa; then Central America and the
Caribbean. Riley (Co-PI) and the DRAGON
project were recognized at the Internet2
Spring Member Meeting on April 28 as an
Honorable Mention for the 2009 Internet2
IDEA awards for its potential impact on the
future of dynamic circuit networking.
>> Wedad Elmaghraby, associate
professor of management science and
operations management, was asked
to continue to serve as an AE for the M&SOM
journal under its new editor Steve Graves.
In addition, I was asked to join the Senior
Editor group for the Supply Chain group at
POM, as well as the Behavioral Ops group of
the POM journal.

assistant professor of marketing, received a
notification from the Social Science
Research Network (SSRN) saying that his

cultural distance and subsidiary support,”
just won the OB Division’s 2009 Award for
Best International Paper. They will be
honored at the OB Division's Award Ceremony
at the AOM Meetings in August.

Smith Professor of Management &
Organization, has been elected
a Fellow of the International Academy of
Management. The group is made up of 270
prominent scholars and executives from 34
countries.
>> Ben Hallen, assistant
professor of strategy, was appointed to
the Business Policy & Strategy Research
Committee for a term running 2010 to 2011.
