Technology Transfer
Washington, D.C. and
Baltimore were both recently
named among the top 10 best
cities to launch a business
(No. 6 and No. 10,
respectively) by Fortune
Small Business magazine and
the Kauffman Foundation.
With the
Baltimore-Washington region
so ripe for startups, it’s
no wonder the state of
Maryland is supporting
technology transfer
initiatives to get
commercialize research
innovations discovered at
universities and federal

Epstein heads the Dingman
Center for Entrepreneurship,

the innovative Tech Transfer
program. The program’s key

technical experts, venture
capitalists, entrepreneurs,
key members of the Mtech and
OTC operations, and the
Dingman Center’s managing
director and
Entrepreneurs-in-Residence.
This important program gives
Smith School MBA students
the opportunity to assist
with technology
commercialization from its
earliest stage, providing
for a rich learning
experience in understanding
and assessing business
fundamentals. Additionally,
this program is
well-positioned to support
the University of Maryland’s
strategic plan to increase
the numbers of ventures
created within the
university community. Some
exciting recent technologies
explored include wirelessly
chargeable batteries and
software to create visual
noise tracking.

SMITH SCHOOL
RETAIL EXPERTS SAY CONSUMERS WIN THIS HOLIDAY
SEASON
Frugal consumers win this
season: “Consumers will be especially deal-prone
this season so retailers may have to resort to
deep discounting. Anticipating a dismal holiday
season, many retailers have already cut down
inventory and started holiday discounts early
this year. Many good deals are already out there
and some hot items may sell out this year.”
-- Jie Zhang, associate
professor of marketing and Harvey Sanders Fellow
of Retail Management, is an expert on retailing,
e-commerce and promotion strategies.
Research-proven shopping
strategies: Dr. Rosellina Ferraro, assistant
professor of marketing at the Smith School,
recently published research on unplanned
purchasing, which found that there is an average
46% chance shoppers will make an unplanned
purchase while at a store. In light of the
current economy, Ferraro and her co-authors
constructed some easy-to-use strategies for
budget-conscious consumers to use during the
upcoming holiday season- and all year round.
* Use a shopping list. And
stick to it!
* Make more frequent, fewer-item trips. Get in,
get the items you need, and get out.
* Limit browsing. Visiting all of the aisles
increases the chance that you will make
unplanned purchases.
* Limit the time spent in the store. This will
force you to focus on the task at hand; getting
what you came for!
* Pay in cash. Make the decision to use cash
before you enter the store. Paying by credit or
check lessens the “pain of paying” and makes it
easier to pick up things you hadn’t planned on
purchasing.
-- Rosellina Ferraro,
assistant professor of marketing, is a consumer
behavior expert
Last-minute shopping won’t
pay off “Consumers who are last-minute shoppers
need to rethink their strategies this year.
Retailers have trimmed their inventories to
avoid the massive pre-Christmas markdowns, which
hurt profits last year. Consumers who wait may
not find the perfect gift.”
-- Janet Wagner,
associate professor and associate chair of
marketing, is a retail expert with a focus on
customer service.
