The Smith Video: Watch It Now!

Working with more than 20 hours of  footage from fantastic interviews with students, deans and faculty members, shots from classrooms, computer labs, Rudy's, the MBA Case Competition, and even last year's MBA Spring BBQ, our message was crafted and produced down to 6 minutes and 29 seconds. The resulting video tells a tale of excellence in fundamentals, technology, teamwork, and community. The video will be used for promotional purposes and available on the Smith School Web site after Spring Break. The Web version is online and ready for you to preview now:

Smith School’s Associate Dean Scott Koerwer
Honored with 2004 International Leadership Award

The World Trade Center Institute, a non-profit organization connecting Maryland business to the globe, has honored Scott Koerwer, associate dean for executive education, entrepreneurship and marketing communications at the Smith School, as a winner of the 2004 International Leadership Award. The award recognizes the Smith School with six other firms that stand out with outstanding examples of international leadership at the Maryland’s 9th Annual International Business Leadership Awards ceremony on March 30, in Baltimore, Md.

The annual award goes to business champions who have been selected from more than 150,000 Maryland companies as individuals who have led their firm to new global heights. Recipients are those who exemplify exceptional entrepreneurial spirit, determination, creativity and cultural sensitivity – all important attributes for success in the global marketplace.

“I am extremely pleased that Scott has been honored as a 2004 International Leadership Award recipient,” said Howard Frank, dean of the Smith School. “Scott’s commitment and hard work in bringing the Smith School to important, emerging markets such as China, have helped place the Smith School in a leading position as a global provider of business education.”

Koerwer has been in his current position at the Smith School since 2001 and has led many of the school's international executive education initiatives. These include the 2003 launch of an Executive MBA (EMBA) program in Beijing and an EMBA program in Shanghai, which begins in November. The Smith School has also partnered with ChinaCast Holdings to deliver executive education programs and content to China’s remote areas.

The Value of Customer Equity
In their efforts to become more customer-focused, companies everywhere find themselves entangled in outmoded systems, metrics, and strategies rooted in their product-centered view of the world. Now, to ease this shift to a customer focus, marketing strategy expert Roland T. Rust has created a dynamic new model called "customer equity,” a strategic framework designed to maximize every organization’s most important asset, the customer. In this week's edition of Smith Business Close-Up, Roland T. Rust, the David Bruce Smith Chair in Marketing, Marketing Department Chair and Director of the Center for Excellence in Service, discusses customer equity.

You can see Smith Business Close-Up every other week on Maryland Public Television stations across our region. Check your local listing for the station in your area.

Ed LockeProfessor Emeritus Edwin A. Locke is the first recipient of the Academy of Management's Lifetime Achievement Award in the field of Organizational Behavior (OB). The award will be presented this August at the annual Academy of Organizational Management meetings in Hawaii. This is the first time this award is being given. According to OB Division Chair Bruce Avolio, the selection process first solicited input from all members of the OB Division and then conducted “a thorough review of each nominee's research accomplishments and recommendation letters.”

“It is a tribute to Ed's standing in the field that he emerged as the most deserving candidate for this award,” says Senior Associate Dean Arjang Assad.

Ed Locke retired from the Smith School as Dean's Professor of Leadership and Motivation and served as chair of the management and organization department for many years.

Congratulations to Roland Rust, David Bruce Smith Chair in marketing and director of the Center for Excellence in Service, and the faculty members who have contributed to the Journal of Service Research. As a result of their hard work, the Journal of Service Research recently gained acceptance to ISI, the premier citation analysis index for academic journals! Officially recognized as one of the leading social science citation indexes, ISI reviews academic journals for acceptance into its index based on an elaborate screening process that includes the quality of the editor, the articles, and the editorial review board. Academic journals, on average, take a minimum of five years of operation before being accepted. The Journal of Service Research, sponsored by Smith’s Center for Excellence in Service, was accepted to ISI after six and one-half years of operation. The Journal of Service Research is one of the most commonly rated research journals on an international scale, and is unique in that it is not sponsored by a major academic association, but rather the independently operated Center for Excellence in Service. Professors Janet Wagner, P.K. Kannan and Brian Ratchford are members of Smith’s faculty that serve on the Journal of Service Research’s Editorial Review Board.

Faculty Services to Become Smith Operations

Office too cold? Phone not working? Need some office supplies? Key or ID card not working? Need a conference room? Then you need to visit, call or e-mail the Office of Smith Operations. No longer known by the long-familiar name of Faculty Services, the department is now called Smith Operations. Director of operations, Tom O’Rourke, says, "We serve a broad number of populations and the naming the department Smith Operations reflects the responsibility to serve those populations. We interact on a daily basis with Smith staff, senior administrators, faculty, doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students. My staff also interacts with numerous other departments on campus; especially Facilities Management -- on building-related issues -- the Sign Shop, the Office of Public Safety, and Network Telecommunications Services.”

Services offered by Smith Operations include classroom and conference room reservations, access card control, key management, office supplies, incoming and outgoing mail, course evaluations, business cards, office moves, telephone support and facilities support.

In addition to Tom O’Rourke, the other cornerstones of Smith Operations are Anne Stevens, who handles keys, building access, office supplies, room reservations, business cards, and more; Tyrone Hagans, who handles incoming and outgoing mail and course evaluations; and Tina Rollason, who handles the telephone system, office moves and other major and minor work involving the building facilities. (Pictured (l to r) Tyrone, Tina, Tom, and Anne)

The name change was timed to coincide with their shift in space logistics. The Copy Center moved to the first floor; Anne, Tyrone and Tina moved into the Copy Center’s space (after a fresh coat of paint and new carpet); the office supplies now occupy the space where Anne and Tyrone once worked; and Tom has moved into Tina’s former office. Tom and his staff cordially invite Smith faculty and staff to drop by and see their new space in 2410 Van Munching Hall, at an Informal Open House on Friday, March 18, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

To reach these vital people, stop by 2410 between 8:00 – 5:00 p.m., or call or e-mail them as follows:
