Roland Rust Named Editor of Journal of Marketing

Roland RustRoland T. Rust, chair of the marketing department at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, was recently named editor of the prestigious Journal of Marketing. This journal has been ranked number one in two of the last three surveys of major marketing journals. It is the oldest and most frequently cited journal in the marketing field and enjoys unique impact and visibility with the international marketing community. The journal’s broad audience ranges from academic members to the business community in the marketing field. Rust’s term will run from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2008.

In his role as editor, Rust will manage the journal's editorial content, selecting and managing the members of the journal's editorial review board, and deciding which articles to publish. Rust describes the editor selection process as rigorous and emphasizes that the selection committee sought a candidate with a strong blend of academic and field knowledge. Rust’s complementary background in academia coupled with his entrepreneurial and consulting endeavors uniquely positioned him for the editor role.

Offering congratulations “for this signal honor and wonderful recognition,” Smith School Associate Dean Arjang Assad said, “[Rust’s] editorship will further reinforce and enhance the visibility and research momentum of the Smith School.”

Rust holds the David Bruce Smith Chair in Marketing at the Smith School, where he also directs the Center for Excellence in Service. His lifetime achievement honors include the American Marketing Association’s Gilbert A. Churchill Award for contributions to marketing research, the Outstanding Contributions to Research in Advertising Award from the American Academy of Advertising, the AMA’s Career Contributions to the Services Discipline Award, Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and the Henry Latané Distinguished Doctoral Alumnus Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has won best article awards for articles in Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing (twice), Journal of Advertising, and Journal of Retailing, as well as MSI’s Robert D. Buzzell Best Paper Award (twice). His work has received extensive media coverage, including a Business Week cover story and an appearance on ABC World News Tonight. He is the founder and Chair of the AMA Frontiers in Services Conference, and serves as founding Editor of the Journal of Service Research. Rust also is an Area Editor of Marketing Science, and serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Marketing, and the Journal of Interactive Marketing. He has consulted with many leading companies worldwide, including such companies as American Airlines, AT&T, Chase Manhattan Bank, Dow Chemical, DuPont, FedEx, IBM, Nortel, Procter & Gamble, Sears, Unilever, and USAA.

Good Luck Cassie Jones!

Cassie JonesCo-workers, friends and family of Cassie Jones gathered at the University Golf Course to celebrate Cassie’s retirement after 16 years with the University of Maryland College Park. Professor Bob Windle and the Department of Logistics, Business and Public Policy (LBPP) hosted a luncheon on Monday, December 6, for more than 60 invited guests. These guests included faculty from the LBPP, marketing, and management and organization departments, Smith support staff, Cassie’s close personal friends, some of her fellow church choir members, and of course, Cassie’s children – Brandy, Chuck, Brittiney, and Dillon.

Cassie Jones has been the administrative assistant for both the departments of LBPP and marketing at Smith during the last eight years. For the last few years Cassie has enjoyed having a 10 hour/4 day work week, and has put that “extra week day” to many worthwhile uses. Just a few of the projects and endeavors with which Cassie is involved in her life outside the Smith School include acting as her church’s administrative secretary, selling real estate, being a Mary Kay Consultant, substitute teaching in Anne Arundel County schools, serving in a prison ministry in Anne Arundel County, and being a foster and adoptive home for Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services. Because Cassie has been involved in so many worthwhile activities, she was honored with a number of certificates and letters of commendation from County Executive Owens’ Office, Senator DeGrange’s Office, and Governor Ehrlich’s Office.

Cassie’s good friend and co-worker, Barbara Chipman, arranged the luncheon, and included some musical performances, including a small part of Cassie’s church choir and a fabulous saxophone solo by Jessie Roberts, a close family friend.

Good luck in all your endeavors, Cassie! We will miss you!
