January 2012 Dean’s Message – Greg Hanifee, Assistant Dean of Executive Programs Dear EMBA Community, Happy New Year! While the University community eases back into activities and prepares for the return of the bulk of students at month's end, the executive team is busily preparing for the start of EMBA Cohort 12 on January 16th - just days away! We're thrilled to be welcoming some fantastically talented people to our program, once again. Additionally, we wanted to highlight the December 22nd Smith School of Business Winter commencement where nearly 400 students, including our EMBA 10 graduates, took their traditional walk across the stage. After the ceremony, which featured a commencement speech from Milton Matthews '68, our newest EMBA graduates and their families joined us for a reception and celebratory toast back at Van Munching Hall. Congratulations again to Cohort 10! For photos of the commencement ceremony, please see 2011 Smith School of Business Winter Commencement on Facebook! Finally, we have heard your feedback and are reworking the formatting of our future newsletters to be more user-friendly. To that end, this month's newsletter is designed specifically to bring attention to several upcoming networking opportunities. Smith Office of Executive Programs New Facebook Page We would like to share with you Smith's Office of Executive Programs newly created Facebook page: www.facebook.com/RHSmithExecutivePrograms. This page is intended for news, events and updates on both our degreed and our non-degreed Executive Programs. The page is set up as an 'organization' page not a profile. Thus, you would only be able to "Like" the page, not join the group and/or link to the profile. You may be wondering, can a Facebook Page see my information if I "Like" it? Our administrators would not be able to see the profiles or timelines of people who connect with or "like" our Executive Education page, only the profile picture and name. Administrators also do not have access to the "News Feed" of individual pages - meaning this page will not show the activities of those members who "Like" it. Page administrators, however, will be able to see anything you’ve made available as "Public" on your profile or timeline, just as anyone else would. Administrators from authenticated pages may also post status updates, which may appear in the News Feeds of users that "Like" our page. from time to time we may also send out updates and messages to those people that "Like" our Executive Education page. So with all that being said, we hope that you take a moment to check us out and stay in touch! Message from Alumni Services In Spring 2012, the Smith School will have its first printed alumni directory – University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business Alumni 2012. Hopefully, you have already received a postcard or an email asking you to update your information to be included in the directory. It is a legitimate request as we’ve contracted with Harris Connect (leader in printed directory industry) to complete this project for us. The directory will be a great resource for alumni in knowing where to connect with one another throughout the world. There is a cost for the book and/or CD and you will be asked to purchase one or the other. Hopefully, you will see the value in having the alumni book. We want to make this inaugural directory a keepsake as well as a resource for connecting with fellow alumni. We appreciate your support in this project and we look forward to strengthening the alumni community with this and other projects.
