Alumni Profile: Ricardo Benn, MBA ’99

Ricardo Benn EE ’94, MBA ’99, is a busy guy, but he counts the hours he spends co-chairing the Alumni Mentor Program Committee as time well spent. “I really enjoy the connection with the student body. It allows me to stay connected to changes within the Smith School and the university.” He has observed many such changes since the time he was a student, especially in the use of technology and the Internet. Opportunity to Gain Audit Expertise with Smith’s New MS in Accounting

If you or members of your organization are involved in internal auditing, find out about Smith’s new MS in Accounting program. Scandals in corporate governance have led to intense interest in best accounting practices, especially after the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The Smith School is offering a new degree with a focus on internal auditing, the Executive MS in Accounting, that can help you and your organization chart a safe course on this ever-more-complex regulatory ocean. The program will be delivered in an executive format, with classes meeting on Saturdays for 15 months. The first cohort for the MS in Accounting will begin in fall 2006. Smith Alumni Invited to Participate in MBA Course Focused on China and India

China and India are the two largest and fastest-growing emerging economies in the world. Experts believe that by 2050, China, the United States and India will be the three largest economies, in that order. To help business managers and organizations succeed in this rapidly changing global economy, the Smith School has developed a new MBA elective course: China and India—Strategic Challenges and Opportunities. This course, open to all Smith School alumni, focuses on analyzing and understanding the strategic challenges and opportunities that developments in China and India present for companies and managers. Smith Professor Receives Top Terp Award

The Smith School's Erich Studer-Ellis, Tyser Teaching Fellow of Management Science and Statistics, received a TIAA-CREF Top Terp Award at the Terps vs. Boston College basketball game in December 2005. Studer-Ellis was nominated by one of his students for the award, which recognizes someone in education for their outstanding performance. The award included tickets to the game and an on-court presentation of the game ball signed by Coach Gary Williams. Read more.

Nominees must be a Smith School faculty member or a Smith School instructor (faculty members from other academic units within the University of Maryland are not eligible.) Robert Isaman’85 Speaks at December Commencement

Robert Isaman ’85, vice president, integration at UTC Fire & Security (UTCFS), a division of United Technologies Corporation, addressed a lively audience of Smith School graduates, family members, friends, and Smith faculty and administrators at the Smith School's winter commencement ceremony on December 22, 2005. Isaman shared with students the four attributes he felt were essential for success in business and life. Read more.


Living on the Ethical Edge

The Robert H. Smith School of Business kicked off its Business Ethics Lecture Series on October 6, with a riveting talk on white-collar crime and “living on the ethical edge” delivered by guest lecturers Alfred and Joan Porro. The Porros spoke of the personal and professional upheaval caused in their lives after they were sentenced to more than 45 months in prison for white-collar crimes. They held an audience of university undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff spellbound as they openly shared their experiences and lessons learned. View the video.


Alumni Spotlight

Major Robert D. Franson, MBA ’00, a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, recently returned from a seven month deployment to Afghanistan, where he served as a Marine Corps combat advisor to the Afghan National Army. While in Afghanistan, Franson participated in numerous combat operations against both Taliban and Al Qaeda insurgents along the Pakistan border. This is his second post-9/11 deployment in the past three years. Franson works for GE Energy Financial Services as an equity analyst covering various energy sectors at both Bear Stearns and Deutsche Bank.

John Woolford ’94, MBA ’00, is director of business planning for Lentigen Corporation, a privately owned biotechnology company focused on manufacturing and development of lentiviral vectors using proprietary gene technology.

Stephen E. Heise, MBA ’76, is vice president of human resources of Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic, N.J.

Michael Brueck ’01, has joined the New York office of Shearman & Sterling LLP as an associate in the capital markets group.

Zev Kaplan ’76 was elected to the board of directors of Homeland Security Capital Corporation.

Afzalul Bari ’02, is currently volunteering in Bangladesh, working on poverty alleviation and microfinance issues with the nonprofit Grameen Bank.

Donta Wilson, EMBA ’05, was named regional president of the Virginia-based Battlefield community bank region for BB&T Corporation.

Shelia C. Parker ’73, is contracts manager at Lockheed Martin Corporation’s subsidiary, Lockheed Martin Federal Healthcare.

Gary J. Merwitz ’92, is a member of the small cap value equity team for Investment Counselors of Maryland.

Paul J. Norris, MBA ’71, is non-executive chairman of the board of W.R. Grace Company, a global specialty chemicals company.

Thomas Hitselberger, MBA’02, married Kelly Meehan on November 12, 2005 at Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Mt Washington, MD. Hitselberger is a senior manager of finance with EMC, formerly Internosis.
