University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business Offers EMBA in Beijing

College Park, Md. and Beijing, China – September 25, 2011 – On the occasion of the University of International Business and Economics’ (UIBE) 60th anniversary, UIBE and the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business will announce an extension of their partnership that began in 2003. Both schools will welcome alumni to the 60th Anniversary celebrations, hosted at the UIBE campus in Beijing. The celebration held during the weekend of September 24th includes a wealth of events, including an official announcement to the press regarding the UIBE/Smith partnership.

The joint 18-month program will begin in March 2012 and be taught by the Smith School’s top-ranked faculty at the UIBE’s campus. The program is part of a larger push by the university and state of Maryland to strengthen ties with the world’s fastest growing economic power.

“This executive MBA program further strengthens the university’s commitment to developing relationships with China” said Wallace Loh, president of the University of Maryland. “This helps to advance the educational, research and economic development missions of the university and bolsters the state of Maryland’s commitment to developing partnerships in China.”

“As China continues to grow they have a tremendous need for world-class business education,” said G. “Anand” Anandalingam, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. “We’re pleased we can meet that need, along with our partner UIBE, and offer students the education that will prepare them to excel as business leaders who understand markets and competition, as well as how to lead through uncertainty and take advantage of the rapidly changing global landscape.”

Smith School faculty members will travel to China to teach the majority of the courses, with the remainder taught by UIBE faculty. Students will earn an MBA from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Management from UIBE. Classes will be held approximately once a month for four consecutive days at UIBE’s campus.

Like the Smith School's domestic EMBA – ranked No. 15 in the U.S. and No. 36 globally by the Financial Times – the curriculum of the China program focuses on teaching business managers how to evolve as innovative global leaders. The program focuses on individual coaching for participants with an emphasis on leadership and innovation in China and Asia. Students will take classes in the core business disciplines, as well as have the opportunity to learn about the U.S. business environment in a weeklong learning trip to Smith School’s College Park, Md. campus just outside of Washington, D.C. The program also incorporates an action-learning engagement projects, enables students to tie their work experience and needs to their classroom work during the program.
