University of Maryland Management and Organization Faculty Honored by Academy of Management

College Park, MD August 2, 2006 The University of Marylands Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced professor Kathryn M. Kay Bartol and professor emeritus Edwin A. Locke, both management and organization department faculty members, have been honored by the Academy of Management for their scholarly and professional contributions to the field. Bartol and Locke will accept their awards at the academys Presidential Luncheon on August 15, in Atlanta. Bartol was selected as the 2006 recipient of the Academy of Managements Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest honors bestowed on members. The academy-wide award recognizes excellence in developing and enhancing a field of study; founding or creatively editing a journal; and/or building institutions, such as through creative or unusually effective service to a major professional organization.

Locke, also the former chair of Smiths management and organization department, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Academy of Managements Distinguished Scholarly Contributions Award. The annually presented award recognizes significant scholarly contributions that have advanced management and organizational knowledge and practice, including conceptual, theoretical or empirical developments of significant impact. Both Kay and Ed have a record of outstanding achievements, said Howard Frank, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. They are great examples of the caliber of the faculty within the Smith Schools management and organization department, which has successfully built a top-ranked reputation based on its significant contributions to research and education in the field

Bartol is the past dean of the fellows of the Academy of Management, as well as past president of the academy. She is a fellow of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and the American Psychological Society. Her work has been published in leading journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Academy of Management Review, Personnel Psychology, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management Review, MIS Quarterly, and Industrial and Labor Relations Review.

Locke is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (American Psychological Association), the Academy of Management and the American Psychological Society. His distinguished career includes many honors, including achieving the rank of No. 2 in scholarship among 576 management faculty from 32 leading business schools in 1989. He won the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology in 1993. The Academy of Management honored him with a Career Achievement Award in 1997.
