University of Maryland Business School Connects Alumni with Career Options

College Park, Md. – January 13, 2009 — The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is bolstering its alumni career services and has added a dedicated alumni career coach and New York-based resources to help business managers hard-hit by the economic downturn. The initiative, dubbed “Smith Connects,” is geared to provide help with job searches and networking while strengthening the sense of community among alumni confronted with uncertainty in the current economic climate. Available services include continuing education and networking opportunities to enhance resume writing and job searches, targeted recruiting and job postings, one-on-one career counseling, and specialized opportunities for those most impacted in the financial services industry and New York City area. “Smith Connects” includes:

Dedicated alumni career coach – Malcolm Munro, assistant director of alumni career services, is available at 301-405-4095, mmunro@rhsmith.umd.edu, to assist with resume writing, job search, coaching and other career advice.

Career workshops – “Finding a Job in a Tough Economy” will be held on Jan. 14 at the Smith School’s D.C. campus in the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. Additional events will be held on Jan. 28 in New York at The Roosevelt Hotel and in February in Baltimore. The workshops, open to all University of Maryland alumni and friends, teach new tactics in career management, help job-seekers create an action plan, and provide an opportunity to network. More information

Smith Alumni Network – Job postings specifically for alumni with more experience are listed on the “Careers” Web page. Alumni can update individual profiles to enter search criteria such as industry, company, state, graduation year, and more to build their networks.

New York-based career assistance opportunities – A partnership with a human resources consulting firm will allow Smith School alumni to access career services locally at a subsidized rate to include workshops, individual consultations and access to a worldwide jobs database.

“We are dedicated to helping our alumni navigate this uncertain economy and we want to provide the most useful services and resources, both now and in the future,” said G. “Anand” Anandalingam, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. “It is important that our former students know they can turn to us at any time.”
