Strategic Design & Innovation Fellows Host a Dinner With Professional Alumni

Undergraduate student Ashley Kim, class of 2019 and senior finance major, writes about the Strategic Design & Innovation Fellows annual dinner held on September 11, 201,8 at MilkBoy Arthouse in College Park, Md. Kim is a member of the Lemma Senbet Fellows program and has also been a member of the Wall Street Fellows program.

Nearly a score of marketing professionals from the DC and Baltimore area returned for the annual Strategic Design and Innovation (SDI) fellows alumni dinner held at the MilkBoy ArtHouse on September 11, 2018. Invited by Mary Harms, associate clinical professor and fellows program champion, the group showcased the array of opportunities and paths available to students seeking a professional career in marketing. The current cohort of three dozen SDI fellows was encouraged to network with the alumni to learn more about positions ranging from marketing technology specialist to digital strategy consultant.

Lauren Roche, a senior marketing and operations management and business analytics double major said she “enjoyed the laid back environment” in the restaurant and was able to connect with a recent grad that currently works at the company she had recently applied to.

Senior marketing and supply chain management double major Robert Neuman, said that it was “a wonderful opportunity to connect with alumni who had similar experiences at UMD, and who truly wanted to help us find careers.”

The event was a great way for students within the current program, both juniors and seniors, to network with each other and leverage the experiences of fellow classmates.

Harms added, “It's an excellent experience for our juniors to see that they can stay in the region and still have an interesting professional career in marketing plus they are exposed to a wide variety of marketing career paths … For many, it's their first experience networking with marketing professionals and they are so impressed with how friendly our alumni are to them. Seniors were also in attendance to learn more about career possibilities in the region.”

36 SDI fellows will travel to New York City at the end of October for two days of visits to companies including BBDO (a full-service agency), Anthem (a retail and packaging design agency) and Publicis Media (a global media agency). Harms is coordinating another alumni networking event at the Hyatt Grand Central Hotel with 25–30 alumni currently employed in the area who will also share their professional experiences. Howard Bomstein, who collaborates with Harms and teaches one of the design fellows courses, attended the September 11 dinner and will accompany the group to New York City.
