Bottom Line

Organizations are often in a race to increase productivity – a good thing in
the business world. But too much service productivity can actually cut into a
company’s revenue, according to new research from the Robert H. Smith School of
Business at the University of Maryland.
In this edition of Smith Business Close-Up, the Smith School’s Roland
Rust talks about his new research that finds lower productivity can
often lead to a better bottom line.
Rust is the Distinguished University Professor, David Bruce Smith
Chair in Marketing. He is founder and Executive Director of two research
centers: the Center for Excellence in Service and the Center for
Complexity in Business. Rust is one of the most prominent scholars in
the world in service marketing. He has served as editor of the top
marketing journals, received numerous lifetime achievement awards, and
founded the Journal of Service Research and the annual Frontiers in
Service Conference.
Smith Business Close-Up is co-produced by the Robert H. Smith School
of Business and Maryland Public Television. The television segment focuses on
the latest thinking in business management, and features in-depth interviews
with Smith School faculty and other members of the school’s community of
business leaders.
